unable to browse 'Mobile device'

maybe im being thick but i am new to the pda scene. just got myself a brand spanking new asus a620bt but find myself unable to browse the 'mobile device' that appears in the my computer section. along with that i get an error 'crittical communication system have failed to start' msg.
anyone had this error before??
im using the newest activesync 3.7.1 that comes with the device and have tried reinstalling it twice now to no avail.
it wouldnt be so bad but i have no other means of putting files onto my microdrive other than blue tooth which wud take forever to fill!
any advice appreciated!
