I guess, im a coder first & game player second. As such, I'd rather download quirky homebrew games. Yep, i did buy Quake I/II, but personally, I didn't enjoy them as much as Blood, Shadow Warrior, Uprising & Carmageddon.
I played Quake to the end, but only because I wanted to get my moneys worth. My other concern, is, why arn't people interested in pushing virtual reality art standards?
3D Engines are more about creating art IMHO. Im constantly searching for new colours, lighting algorithms and textures.
Each engine I've coded had different ablities. I think for any game to succeed, you must select a engine type that meets the games requirements, while working within platform & human limitations.

There is much more to the engine algorithm debate. Thats the beauty of 3D programming :-)
