Can break easily, chew up batteries, and have somewhat slow access times.

Get solid state memory.

Actually, for large amounts of data, microdrives are pretty fast. But besides that Matt is pretty much right.

Solid state memory has also dropped in price, I picked up a 512 CF for 75 dollars.
