With the raw power and the long batteries life it has, I will use it to make those GBA owner feel like a mouse!

Seriously, I will be using it to play SNES and GBA mainly, and watching a movie or 2 on it.

How would you best take advantage of all the features the a716 offers?

There are so many things my aging Toshiba e310 cannot do :P A new ASUS, one of the fastest and sexiest PPC's out there I would:
1. Take advantage of the ASUS as an awesome gaming machine to play anthelion and AOE in lectures!
2. Be able to access the medical library's intranet to look up journal articles/clinical evidence through the wi-fi connection.
3. Use bluetooth to connect wirelessly to my mobile and chat to friends on MSN messenger when really bored on clinical attachments or lectures/tutorials whilst appearing to be busily note-taking
4. Finally be able to run MIMS, resco-audio recorder for patient consultations on an x-scale device!
5. With the awesome batterylife, I would be able to carry my device 24-7 and use it all day without worrying that the battery will not last into the wee-hours of the night.

Survivor Solo

Postby ceejames » Feb 18, 2004 @ 5:02am

I would get a solar power recharger which when combined with its extremely long battery life would allow me to walk away from civilization, this would be my one luxury item.

I would then use it to create a web blog called Survivor Solo.

(yes I know I would not be very far off from civilization as I would need wi-fi access, but other than that this works)

Imagine the survivor talents I could display by looking up whatever I need to know on the internet via wi-fi. Need to make fire, look it up, need to make water drinkable, look it up, need to find out how to make toilet paper from leaves (and avoid making it from poison ivy, or poison oak), you guessed it, look it up.

I would chronicle my adventures, or non-adventures with a bluetooth keyboard.

I would use a cf camera to capture the nature I would be experiencing. Pictures posted to my web blog of my encounters with the various things nature has to offer....lions, tigers and bears oh my.

I would use the wi-fi internet connection to access my personal system transferring mp3's as needed, storing them on a massive SD card. Changing them to reflect my moods and the seasons.

Want for the sound of a human voice, download and play an audio book.

Need mental stimulation, download and read an ebook.

Dark outside, becomes an emergency flashlight.

Worse comes to worse, and I use all my resources and need to bail on the Survivor Solo project (or have someone run out an emergency care package) simply email for help.

Obviously this unit is usable to supply nearly all the needs one has in life, it would be in effect my buddy....no officially rechristened from the Asus A716 to the ASUS MyBuddy, portable life maintenance device.

Uses for the Asus A716

Postby Curious68 » Feb 18, 2004 @ 5:32am

With is connectivity and its long battery life, the Asus A716 can help me in my ongoing quest to surf every website of the internet. Just think, no time wasted during bathroom breaks...reaching the ends of the internet would be within my grasps!!!

Seriously, I figure that I would use it at work to help with patient care, at home for wireless internet surfing, and for the outdoors to help me pass the time when my wife is shopping (music and games). I would loan it to my wife when she drives in unfamiliar places since she doesn't have a good sense of direction (of course, I would have to consider a Bluetooth GPS).

Since I don't have a PPC yet, this device would be a great start. Good luck to all participants!

I would use it to send messages to my Battle-Monkey-Bot via the WiFi networking...

He could take pictures of the destruction and use the SD slot to email them back to me.

All while listening to some MP3's of Ministry...

Look out for those internet hot-spots.

skeptical about review

Postby phaminator » Feb 18, 2004 @ 6:44am

OK, first of all, I have an Asus A620 and so I don't NEED a PDA. However - listen to my story. Matt Keys gave the A620 a 8.5 / 10. Personally, I think it only deserves a 5 or 6 at most. Why?

Reviews like this (A716) and the A620 are really only surface reviews. How good is the PDA in the long-term? What idiosycrasies or little nitpicks does the PDA have that can impair it's usability? Reviews like this can never answer this question. I can because I've been using the A620 for almost a year.

Why the A620 licks compares to the Ipaq 3850 I still have?

[1. Screen Issues with A620]

a.) Screen may be crisp BUT only within a narrow range of viewing angles. For example, You have to tilt the screen roughly 25-30 degrees from the horizontal to get a good image (meaning colors actually show as colors and not gray). This is uncomfortable - I typically view the screen at a 50-60 degree angle.

b.) Weird light bleeding on the edge of the screen - shows up especially in black backgrounds during Movie playback. Annoying, but after color shows up this disappears.

c.) The screen is nice, but the sensitivity and accuracy of its response to the sylus is worth lamenting about. Using the on-screen keyboard to input text is alright on the Ipaq 3850 (the bigger 3.8" screen may be helpful) but at least it is always accurate - when I tap on the key, the key is inputted. But with the Asus is a different matter. For example, when I tap the "r" key, sometimes the "5" key will be hit instead. Or when I activate a program in the program bar of Omega One's Battery Pack 5, another program starts up - really annoying. Also, sometimes when I activate a program, I get this description of a link and it's program path instead of the program starting up. This happens when you tap and hold onto the program icon. This means that the sensitivity of the screen is wacko. When I use a screen, I expect it to be accurate. The Asus fails to deliver.

[2. Buttons & D-Pad]

a.) Microphone is crappier, not as clear. Records total garbage with Resco Audio Recorder - especially MP3 recording. At least with the Ipaq, Resco works. Likely a software-hardware issue, but I don't care much which, I just want it to work.

b.) Record button is located in the most annoying spot, right where you use leverage to pull the CF card out, or when you grip the top of the PDA to pull it out of your shirt/pants pocket. I always end up pushing the record button all the time and it loads up the recorder when I don't want it to. Hassle.

c.) D-pad is nothing to rave about. If the PDA is in your shirt pocket and you want to use the D-pad to switch tracks during MP3 playback, it often hits in a diagonal direction instead of the direction you want. In other words, there's no tactile feedback when you hit up or left. The Ipaq does have feedback. This becomes an issue when you have to map the D-pad for Mp3 playing - read below.

d.) Mapping of the buttons is awful. If you use Mp3 playback, and map a button for turning the screen off, it works. But if you map a button as next track or play/pause, the screen turns back on. ?!?!. So in other words, if I'm listening to a track and switch the screen off, and then want to change tracks by pressing its mapped button, the screen turns back on - exactly NOT what I want. There is an option to disable "wake up" on button presses but this doesn't change the situation I just described. This problem is likely a hardware issue because I've tried several mp3 programs and they all do this (any button mapping turns on the screen). Furthermore, this does not happen in my Ipaq. Therefore, I must map commands onto the D-pad, because pressing left or down doesn't turn on the screen. But even this has problems as I have just described above.

[3. CF issues]

a.) Switching CF cards doesn't always read in file explorer. Instead, it thinks that the previously inserted CF card is still inside. I have to re-inserts 2x to get it to read.

b.) Inserting/Pulling out CF sometimes causes the OS to crash - requires soft reset

[4. OS Issues - likely Not Windows related]

a.) Have to soft reset at least 2x a day. Switching the power on during MP3 playback or MPG playback often freezes it up. Sometimes just closing a program will freeze it up. I don't have to reset as much with my Ipaq

b.) Erratic battery level. If I run it down to say 40%, it'll show up as 60% if I soft reset. If I run it down to 0%, when I charge it, it'll show up as 25%. Why???

c.) Smartbackup doesn't work at Low power (~10%) battery. This defeats the purpose doesn't it??? I Just tried backing it up right now, and suprisingly it works but it's at 99% battery life.

There are probably a few more things I've forgotten, but these are the main things, and none of these issues were mentioned in Matt's review. Sure the screen is crisp and colorful, but that doesn't mean it's usuable as input. Yes it's fast, but what's the point if it crashes everyday, or I use it for MP3's more than half the time? Btw, this is a replacement A620, the first one that I got had a burnt pixel, which shouldn't even happen in the first place and was a real hassle especially since I ordered online.

All in all, the point of my complaints is this: If I win the A716, I will use it, everyday in fact (because I still use my A620 everyday) and I can give a "daily-user" review of the device instead of a "its fast, good battery life, good screen" review that are too common nowadays.

From the A620 experience, I would NOT buy any more Asus PDA's, nor would I recommend it - too cheaply made. But I have to try the A716 to find out Asus still makes them cheap quality but fast. The Ipaq that I still have as comparison is much more durable, stable, and reliable. I just can't wait until the Ipaq 6300 series comes out - should be good.

I would use it because I need a new PPC and I can play around with my school's network. AND IM SEXY! Oh, and I will give my 400MHz Axim to the first person who asks for it on PM, and I will pay for shipping!

Phaminator, go away, we don't need to hear your insights on Matt's reviewing skills or your mindless gibberish on 'cheaply made' Asus's.

phaminator,

I just want to say that if that wasn't the biggest load of bull, I dont know what is. Considering the A620 came out on June 23rd, I'll give you 7 months that you really could have had the device. With that said, I'll also make note that if you have those problems, you obviously didn't get the ROM updated around October, which would have taken care of most all of those problems -- although this is the first time I've heard of most of them anyway.

Your complaints about the d-pad are funny..... you want to change tracks of an mp3 while in your pocket? Seems easy to screw that one up no matter the d-pad.

The other thing is the screen issue...... The a620 has the best screen on any pda that isn't VGA and even then I'd have to debate because of the inherient use of VGA on the current OS.

As far as smartbackup goes.... it's set up automatically and once it hits the low battery mark it backs up and shuts off.....

Everything else I can't even get into, because Asus has fixed issues with WM2003 which have fixed all of the other issues. I suggest contacting me and I'll hook you up with the Asus tech that takes care of my customers issues.

Ah.. the hp 6300 series... why don't we try to compare apples with apples?

Sincerely,
Justin O'Dea

wait, so you do want the a716 then? The start of your post made it seem that you did not. Well in that case, please re-read the requirements for the contest and make a new post. If you have issues with the a620 please take it to a different thread, this thread is for the a716 giveaway.

How would I use the new Asus PocketPC

Postby lebovitz » Feb 18, 2004 @ 8:28am

Well,
Since I'm about to become a father in about 2 months, I thought of a nice idea.

I noticed that when our neighbours visit us, and their kids are fast asleep, they don't want to hire a babysitter for an hour and don't want to wake their kids and take them with them. What they do is put one cellular phone beside their bed and dial to their other cell phone. They then listen every 5 minutes to make sure everything is OK. (they live on the floor beneath us, so they sometimes rush to their children).
I thought about using the Wi-Fi feature and creatinga small network in my home, with a Wi-Fi digital camera that will be placed above the child's bed. This way I'll be able to see him all the time (and not just listen).
The large battery will do much help! :)

To make it short, my Asus A620 is dead, it's black screen all the time. Tried everything, soft reset, factory reset, nothing works, I charged it to full, nothing, and since I overclocked it to 530 mhz for Fpsece the warrantly is no more.

I don't have the money to purchase another one, and my wife wouldn't let me even if I had it since it was hard even to convince her the first time I purchased it, so either I'm lucky and get one for free or I'm out of the Pocket PC scene for some time.

If I win I can send the A620 to you, maybe you can get it to work and give it for free, use it as frisbee with the dog (a fast dog), whatever.

Maybe I can send you my wife better? She isn't too noisy and cooks well

Doh, guess I should've signed in...

what I would do to take full advantage of my a716's features is invite it to a candle lit dinner, and order the finest champane, and when the time is right make my move, it wont be able to resist my charm, and then and only then, will all of the a716's sultry features such as dual slots, blazing speed, clear sound, long battery life, bluetooth, and WiFi capabilities be fully taken advantage of, reaching peaks unheard of making other PDAs envious, the a716 will be in extacy as all its features will be fully aroused. The partnership and bond between us, man and PDA, will take us to peaks beyond imagination with no boundaries, thus all of the features taken advantage of.
