Asus A716 Giveaway

Wow... contest.

Postby Marcello » Feb 23, 2004 @ 7:41am

After noticing there are 14 pages of posts on this thread, it occurred to me I have basically no chance of winning, but I figured I might as well decrease everyone else's odds by a miniscule factor.

From what I read in the review, everything sounds great and there's no real question on how you'd use the features here, but how you wouldn't use them. For example, I don't plan on using the nice battery life to jump-start my car. I probably wouldn't use the 400MHz processor to calculate 3,141,592 digits of PI. The next 100 ton glass sculpture I find probably won't get to be balanced on that nice gamepad. I doubt I'd get the chance to use the nice bright screen to signal for help when lost on a tiny island. And the wireless 802.11b would most likely not give me a chance to communicate with extraterrestrial lifeforms.

But after that, I don't think there is a whole lot I wouldn't do with those features.

(And in a half-hearted consumerist plea for free stuffs: It would be nice to upgrade from a budget Dell Axim X5 to something I could never afford even if I had the money. But if anyone wants to contribute to the trying-to-buy-a-new-ppc-fund, go check out ).

Good luck to you all,

Marcello

Wow, what I could do....

1) Use the wifi @ school for MSN, browsing class notes posted on the web, and sharing files with other users on the same Lan subnet.

Also use the wifi @ home for MSN, surfing (I've actually posted in pocketmatrix while sitting on the can :D) streaming movies/mp3s from my computer, and active sync over wifi which I heard is faster than USB syncing.

2) Use the IR Port to transfer files between my friends with a PPC or Cellphone IR Port.

Also use it to remote control my TV, VCR, Digital cable box, and Screen projectors @ school ;)

3) Use the bluetooth to connect to my cellphone for instant dialing from the address book.

4) Use the CF slot for storage or GPS unit when I get my car, I'm ALWAYS lost :(

5) SD slot for more storage if necessary.

5) When on the bus to and from school, I can watch Family guy, play Mp3s, or Play emulator games :)

6) Take notes @ school with either a wireless keyboard or notepad.

Re: Asus A716 Giveaway

Postby Klist » Feb 23, 2004 @ 6:28pm

I have been a CE or Pocket PC user since 2000 starting with a Philips Nino 500 and then moving to a Jornada 548. I had been desiring a newer model for the past year or so but the Jornada was a very solid performer and I couldn't justify the cost simply because I wanted a new one.

In late January 2004, however, flying back from my mother's funeral my luggage was pilfered on the airline I was flying and my trusty Jornada was stolen. Talk about adding insult to injury! The airline basically won't cover electronic equipment.

I am a network technician for an airline (not the one where my Jornada was stolen) and I travel usually about 3 times per week. I used it for tracking expenses, tracking overtime, reprogramming baggage tag printers, keeping all of my useful information while traveling, the normal PIM functions, occasional MP3 use, occasional web surfing, and what gave me a lot of satisfaction was showing off my family pictures using slide shows and video clips.

These are the functions that I would use the A716 for and with the wireless connectivity a lot more.

My wife and I have been shopping for what the best replacement would be and my list of criteria were:

Compact Flash slot (for peripherals)
400Mhz Xscale processor
Bluetooth
large ROM for easy upgrades
Long battery life (always the achiles heal of traveling)

I preferred the models with both SD and CF slots which are very few.
Optionally I wanted wifi but only if it was reasonably affordable.

My list of replacements is basically down to the iPaq 2210, 4150, and the Asus A716. Of these the 2210 doesn't have wifi but has the CF slot, the 4150 has wifi but not the CF slot, the A716 is the only serious contender with everything on-board and add to that the incredible battery life the A716 would supply all of my needs in a Pocket PC.

I thank you for this opportunity in the A716 giveaway.

That' exactly what I need for my diploma...

Postby Rogalon » Feb 23, 2004 @ 6:29pm

Hi there. I'm a student at the university of mannheim and started work for my diploma a few day ago. Topic is: A device to hook up and evaluate ECG (Electric Heart Activity)Signals on a high speed pocket pc. (Bluetooth, CF, WL - doen't matter how - as the calculation is done within the PDA there' no need for high transmission rates...) Right now I have to use an old Toshiba e570 200Mhz device that keeps crashing...
So hey - i'd be using the Asus to build a portable ECG for paramedics that evaluates the data and gives you detailed information about your patient's current status, suggests therapies etc. Just think about it - a PDA that could SAVE life.
And since I have exactly 6 months from now to get a prototype up and running it would be nice to have a fast, reliant PDA here. - Well, thinking about it - asus probably won't release this shiny, precious, little thing here until my deadline has run out... So - isnt' that a good suggestion? :P :P

Bye, rOGA[/u]

How would you best take advantage of all the features the a716 offers?

Taking advantage of the features requires winning the competition.
Winning the competition requires a great tactic.

The 3 needed ingredients of the winning submission.
Timing... Appearing to be a worthy winner... And yet being Funny.

Well I've waited till almost the end of competition to be hopefully in the last page.

I suggest I place it in front of a web cam so all can use it from a *Limited* range of options via a website. What a nice guy I know appear to be.

I then on getting the lovely thing; pre-record the results of those limited options building it into a website. Leaving me free to go anywhere with it. While 24-hours a day it appears to be in camera shot.
The stylus is mightier than the pen!
