Windows XP has Offline folders that works quite well -- but CVS, or something similar would still work best.
Using Offline Folders:
1) Create a network share on your Desktop computer for the folder you want to share.
2) On your laptop, map this drive
3) Open the My Computer folder on your laptop, and select Tools->Folder Options. Go to the Offline Files tab, and make sure it is enabled.
4) Right click on the mapped drive on your laptop, and check off "Make Available Offline"
I've just started using it, and it works pretty good. Tho, as Dan suggested, if you're synchronizing code, then you might want to set up a CVS server on your desktop, and use TortoiseCVS on your laptop or something. It'll let you revert code changes and everything.
