ugh, after seeing that pic miracle I had to post my own 8) your photoshop skills cant match my paint skills  . This is what i use for GFdoom, and it works incredibly close to the standard keyboard and mouse config we all know and love (been using this setup in GFdoom for the longest time), plus it can allow for aiming up/down with stylus as well. I just roughly "painted" a similar setup onto landscape mode.
The main point of this setup is that you can aim freely and percisely with the stylus (not with a retarded D-pad), but doing this while both strafing and fireing I found was the hardest problem, so I made a touch area, and basically overlayed the fire button on the top half of the aim area, leaving the bottom for just aiming, so when you tap and hold the top area to fire you can aim as well (the equivilant of aiming with the mouse for the lower area, and holding down the fire button and aiming with the top area).
This picture is just to give you a rough idea of how it works, open (which I would place as the rest of the touchscreen space), and all the other controls could be anywhere else (buttons or touchscreen). Also the touch areas can be invisible and/or moved as well so they dont get in the way.
I've posted this on the GFdoom thread a few times, not sure if anyone else tried it or what they think of it yet, as I am quite curious, but I do beleive this general setup is the way to go for PDA FPS controls, without a question the best I've used. I suppose some people dont mind using the d-pad to aim, but just another idea to concider I guess.
