sounds like time for a beginner lesson.
avi stands for audio -video interleave. It uses higher compression than an mpeg and needs more processor time.
As for avis being bigger or small, generally avis are a smaller file size for the same compression, which is why we want this pocket divx player so much. limited space = small file size, ideally.

wmvs are something different altogether, but they are just shite all round, so we ignore them.

now for encoding, its best to use vdub for avis and tmpgenc for mpeg, because vdub is a faster program and has more features such as editing. tmpgenc is just a recompressor and resizer. it is also very slow.
good setting for ppc in divx avi are about 200 to 300kps video, 200 for casio i suppose. 56 or 64 kbits sound, altho lower bitrates will be ok, and a reolution a bit below 320 x 240. i normally use summat like 270 x 180.
and ideot, for the proud leader of the pmatrix encoding encoding team, you know fu ck all.

Also that was wrong, the Divx codec is smaller than the mpeg format, But almost all other types of avi are huge. If you use the intel indeo video codec or somthing else the avi's are alot bigger. Were talkin like gigs for a movie. Mpeg was invented for small high quality video to compete with clunk old avi's. You may also be intrsted to know DivX is nothing more than a slightly modified Mpeg4 codec.

the old intel codecs are lame, as is microsoft video 1, but they are going back 7 or 8 years. The recent crop of codecs such as MS-MPEG-4 V3 are pretty good, altho divx is better.
on a lighter note, this pocket divx player is the coolest thing ever. I'm having episodes of friends almost full screen (280x212)o n my em500, at 180 kps, running perfectly smoothly, apart from hanging every 5 mins.
how do i stop it hanging?

perhaps it is stopping to cache more video? If you have not already, set the cache limit to the max.

that helps a little, i think the big problem is that MMC is a bit shit at sustained transfer.
