I also own an A716 and i'm also pissed...
So, can't we do something?

Is it possible that ASUS could release what they got (discarding any resposability) to let someone, some expert, everyone... to try solving the problem...

I know this seems to be stupid but I think it would be good to try...

Is there anyway I could type the pound sign though? Any freeware which will allow me to change the on screen keyboard to English settings?

That's an easy one, there are *many* add-on keyboards. I know PDAMill make one called TopKey: http://www.pdamill.com/prod_tk.shtml
Haven't tried any myself, so I don't know which ones are really the best, but TopKey sticks out the most in my mind.

hmm.. I guess I can finally put my constant searching for news about a W2003SE rom to an end. Not the news I've hoped for, since when I bought the A716 last week, the retailer told me I'd be able to get an update soon. Asus was working on it etc.

IMO, this news should be put on the main Asus website, including the product specific pages, because I think there are quite some people out there that still think an update would happen (like me, until 2mins ago). Thanks Justin, for providing the end-users with reliable info that cannot should have come from Asus itself.
