Color depth on MPeG files?

does anyone know how to reduce the color depth on an mpeg file to 8-bit?(256 colors) ??<br><br>it would greatly improve the FPS on any movie if you could do this.!!
If you put something into the void, is it still a void?

I dont think the mpeg codec supports color depth that low.
