Excuse me? The "breaking in" makes naff-all difference on today's cars. And why should a German car do less mpg than an American car, especially given fuel prices in Europe. Might be hard for you to understand, but petrol here is 90p/litre in some places. ($1.67/litre).
If you do things by the gallon, then that's $6.32/gallon. Think you'll find manufacturers try harder over here to get better efficiency...
