I Have succeded in porting PocketQuake to CASIOS

The original improvement he sent me increased the fps by 24%. The mods he sent me last night actually resulted in a slower fps than the first improvement (down .47 fps, or a 12% net improvement). We're discussing it now. I don't know what improvements he sent you, but try using only the new d_scan.c, and use all the other original code and see what improvement you get (or use the source package I sent you).

Dan East

The casio update doesn't actually increase the physical speed, it does smooth some scrolling though and fix a few bugs. You'd really need to update the ROM files to improve things like that, or the hardware =).

One advantage to the slow Casio port is you get to see Quake on a crystal clear display, instead of the iPAQ's annoying 'scan line' style 16Bit output.

Dan, when will we see a release of the optimised iPAQ code?

YESS.... has anyone tested this on a E-115 yet.
Just wondering how much slower it would be compared to an e-125. But all in all Great job.

Well done Carpediem! It plays reasonably well on my EM-500 / 168. Not completely unplayable as I thought it will be. I played through a good third of level one befoe duying (and I was never good in Quake anyway).

I keep gz file on MMC card and the initial loading time is terrible :( I'll try to unpack it as suggested in readme file.

Congrats to you and Dan for this incredible achievement.

I can't believe I was actually PLAYING quake on my Casio 125. It was even playable enough that I completed level one without dying- and my Casio isn't overclocked.

Although the framerate is low, 0.1a is a much better build than I had anticipated. Expecting a slideshow, I entered the game and ended up whoopin' ass on some grunts. Seeing those gibs on my Pocket PC nearly made me crap.

I like the mlook touchpad, mostly because I am used to playing FPSs on a laptop.

Sorry this reply isn't technical, with hints on how to increase the engines speed. I just wanted to say that this alpha build is much better than 99% of the FINISHED pocket pc games that are out on the market.

I greatly dislike the touch pad mlook feature. If anything, the touch mlook thing should be OVER the actually play field, and if you double tapped it would shoot, or something like that. Then have a keyboard at the bottom of the screen just like Doom4CE. The keyboard display gives it a more authentic feel.

Nice job on the Casio build. I'll psot my Timerefresh results at the first intro scene for you guys. I have a Casio E-125, not overclocked, with an IBM 1GB Storage card holding the .PAK file. I have about 14 MB free program memory and 8 free storage memory. I get presicely 1.525087 FPS on the Timerefresh, but can walk around the normal plethora of corridors at an obvious 4 FPS. I hope this helps you guys judge things. Just thought I post.
[edit] oh ya, I forgot to tell you that the PAK file is NOT GZipped on my storage card. That lowers load times, but has no impact on FPS (I would think).
Last modification: Moose Master - 02/23/01 at 14:25:12

I doubt it. Is it mirrored on PocketMatrix?
[edit]
alright, I found it and it's downloaded.
Hey, the timerefresh seems slower, but the demo was slightly faster. But anyway, here's the new timerefresh rate: 1.838482
I don't think that the bubbling effect is worth .3 FPS, not to me.

Hey CARPEDIUM. I'm thinking of overclocking my Casio. Is it worth it, is it easy? Any trouble? Did you use the pencil method? What kind of pencil did you use if so?

Last modification: Moose Master - 02/23/01 at 15:53:20

Well it is worth it if you wanna play PocketQuake, some Emulator or watch Movies. You'll get a big performance boost if you do.
I think PocketQuake is more than playable on a E-125 @ 200 but i haven't tried it yet. On mine i have lots of fun playing it and you get used to the small framerates.

I overclocked it using the pencil method, it was very easy. I learned how to overclock it on brighthand.

Anyway, there's a new version of pocketquake for mips, it's labeled the same as the old one but it has keys configured and THAT is what makes it playable, playing without having to use the pen is awesome.
