Mayday...Mayday

Mayday...Mayday

Ok, I admit it... I'm a student.

Most students can't afford to pay for 200GB of transfer/month which is what this site is going to amount to for march.

You do the math... 200GB @ $2/GB... that's $400.

I've put $800 of my hard earned money into this site :(...

You can help! :).

.

I thank you for your support; I'm going to do anything that is in my power to keep this site up forever and ever.

If you have a company that would be willing to sponsor us ($220US/month) please send an email to chris@pocketmatrix.com. We would offer your company lots of advertising space on our well visited website.

For those of you wondering why our banner ads aren't paying for the hosting: The advertising industry is in a huge slump and we are getting paid around $50/month from FastClick for the banners on our site.

Everybody donate $1. :)

Moderators: I'm tired and mad, please edit my message to make it make sense.

Last modification: Chris Edwards - 03/24/01 at 23:18:08

Why is the donation going to WebNoggin.com? (Of which site I cannot reach.)

Thnaks for clearing that up Moose! :)
Phat, that's 200 GB of TRANSFER per month, the site itself is not 200 GB large.

To help out (beyond donating) I've optimized my habits of reading this site to reduce the bandwidth used here's some tips for regular readers:
* Use the pull-down menu at the bottom of the page to jump to forums. One less view of the main forum page times the number of forums times all the other people here is a lot of saved bandwidth.
* Bookmark the Forum Login page
* Once logged in, take note to which forums have new posts. That way when you finish reading the last new post [of interest] you can jump to only those forums (unless, of course, you want to post.)
* Disabling graphics may help on the news page, but most other pages recycle graphics so it's pulled from your cache. It helps a little, but only a very little.
* Don't post unless you really have something to add to the discussion. :P
* Re-read a post before replying to it if possible. I know many of us have little free time to do so, but this will help by there being one less post for the view-any-new-post people (like me :D) to read.

TIm, Moose, Phat, Chris, whomever - feel free to copy, edit, add to, and repost this list.

How about third party hosting for the files only? I'm sure that there's some cheap sites available for hosting the download files!

Since the files are over 100 times bigger than the webpages themselves, you could save a bundle. Probably cut your costs by 90%!

Yeah, the pak files would be the first thing to go (in a dire situation). The exe's are pretty reasonable.

Dan East

I wonder if PlanetQuake would be interested in serving the .PAK files. I'm not sure if PlanetQuake doesn't have their files hosted by FilePlanet, though. Worth a look in to.
