Oh, I thought of something!

These are the same people who praise the crap churned out by Jimmy Software. If I wanted a sidescroller, I'd buy a damn gameboy. With all the talent at Jimmy, they really could really do something fantastic.

PocketGamer proudly displays "cross numbers" on their site like that is something I couldn't possibly get on any other "handheld" device. Even a stickynote pad could do this.

Do we really need another GALAXIAN or TETRIS rip-off? We must need at least 10,000 different variations of these types of games before we are really satisfied.

I don't even care what the poll results are. Apparently some people are just happy with the current offering of games for PPC.

I'm not. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll return to the "mother of all games" and go frag some freakin' bots. :)

Thanks for your positive remarks. Pocket Quake is still beta. I wonder how many other apps are of significance enough to be rated before they are even finished?

Dan East

I can't even think of anything to add that 999 hasn't already covered.

Hmmph

Last modification: randall - 03/27/01 at 22:01:22

I think, personally, that they're referring to the playability of PQ versus is actual material. ... If they're not then I pity them...
but overall, yes, I respect the PQ's still really beta, but honestly, how likely do you think it's going to be that it a.) hits 30+ FPS on current hardware and b.) has a control scheme so strikingly similar to the WASD + mouse that gamers wouldn't have to convert at all. To that extent, I believe they're right... it's a bit impractical to play PQ and keep it on a PPC (if you need/could use the space for something else). Now, if we were to, say, develop a whole episode for the PPC with simple levels but decent gameplay, then I think that opinion would shift.

And for the love of god, would someone please figure out how to drop the realtime lighting loops? they slow the game down so much it's not even funny.

Remember, for hardcore quake fans, keeping it on the device is a must, as it is for those who want to show off... but for the typical pocket gamer, it's unlikely they're going to want to keep it as it takes up so much space and it's really impractical to play it...

I'm sure 999 can argue for the playablility though :D ... He's got the whole play scheme down pat :D.

You're damn right I can argue about playability :)

Until you've spent some time taking down bots on a PPC friendly map, it's really hard to see where I'm comin' from here ;)

Ok here's an idea - which you can LOL at or ROTFL I don't mind.

Why not release a zip/archive file of PocketQuake with a bot (reaper please) pak in the zip and the cfg's etc in the right directory in the zip and a map in the zip (999a or maldm), so that on install it runs and works. (MIPS first please)

I'm currently working my way through full quake (again) and loving it. Suddenly the journey to work is pleasant, headphones a blessing. Although as soon as I get home my son uses up the entire battery life of my E115 !! (need a spare power lead), but I can feel the pull of those bots and like previous posts I'm having a nightmare getting them to work.

Just a thought .. Keep up the good work

Why is anyone even trying to compare Quake on a PPC to Quake on a full blown desktop computer? Yeah, I'll admit playing Quake on a full blown computer (keyboard, mouse and joystick) is just a "teansy" bit better than playing it on a PPC.

But I sure as hell ain't going to drag out my computer to play Quake, while waiting for my wife to pick out shoes at Nordstrom. I wouldn't even drag my laptop out, and it's a decent, compact gaming machine.

Quake on a PPC is about as good as it gets.

Here's the thing: if you didn't play Quake on a desktop computer, you probably won't play it on a PocketPC either. Someone out there is downloading/buying PocketCrossword puzzles.

It sure as hell ain't me.

I completely agree randall.

It's the convenience, luxury and ability to just plain show off that makes it so wonderfull.

It's the same principal as making the PPC's themselves. Everyone who has got a Desktop would appreciate the convenience of a PPC but won't want to take the Desktop on the road with them !!

Long live PocketQuake and bring on the next release!

Perhaps I should have said that obviously you would have to assume that the registered pak is in the id1 directory after install, coz you wouldn't want to distibute that !!!

Just think, if I engaged my brain b4 typing all of this could've been in one post.

I think bashing pocketgamer.org for having a simple poll that simply asks, how do you think the gameplay is so far?, is kind of silly, and certainly doesn't warrant to say that everyone that visits pocjetgamer and the site author sit around playing pocket crossword puzzle... the reason these stupid games keep coming out is because stupid companies keep releasing them (and then actually expect people to pay for them when there are better versions for free, just read the last review on the bubble games) thats not pocketgamer.org's fault... its just a simple little poll asking how you think the gameplay is, I don't think Mike (webmaster) wanted to take the time to write, "Pocket Quake is a great technical achievement for the PPC and although it is still in beta form and is not the full released version yet, it is readily available to the public and is in a playable form. In your opinion, how playable do you find the game on your machine? For ARM version w/ shareware pak, see poll ballot 1; for ARM version w/ registered pak see poll ballot number 2; for ARM version w/ custom deathmatch (w/ or w/o bots) see poll ballot number 3; for MIPS version with sharware pak see number 4; MIPS registered 5; MIPS deathmatch see ballot 6." This is just a general question to the PPC gaming public and isn't something to get upset over and start making fun of pocketgamer.org, In fact, if it's just a bunch of crossword players, what was 999 doing there? Checking up on the next version of PDAUtilities Block puzzle? I didn't think so either. Almost every pocketgamer goes to this site, including us, and don't forget that pocketquake (or pocketmatrix) wouldn't have an 1/8 of the popularity it has w/o pocketgamer, also this would probably be no action on this forum, meaning development of a MIPS version maybe wouldn't even exist yet w/o Carpediem visiting here, etc.... So don't get all upset and start boycotting pocketgamer.org over a stupid little poll. Oh yeah, I said that the gameplay was good overall.

Well said!

now that I got a name check on pocketgamer, I have to stand up for them! :)

Seriously tho, I dont think anyone said that EVERY visitor to pocketgamer plays Crossword games.

I think its that 999 and the others are so close to the Pocket Quake project that (understandably) the critisims (if thats what they were) are taken to heart.

WE know that PQ is a GREAT achivement, the control method especially (in my opinion), it just that how it was worded (although perhaps unavoidble) gave the wrong impression of a project that is still in progress.

Just my 2p :) (im a brit - we dont go in for all this 'cents' malarkey :) )

Jaybot:

Who's bashing PocketGamer?

They're one of our biggest traffic supporters.

The gripes are with the Poll results, and if indeed a beta program like PocketQuake should even warrant a poll this early.

I feel the Poll results are the way they are because the darned PQ exe is still only beta .05 . Can you imagine if a Poll was done on beta .01? There is a huge difference between .01 and .05, just the same as one can predict another huge leap from beta .05 and the final EXE (whenever that is released).

That being said, perhaps you can see my point, in stating the Poll is infact extremely premature.

Yeah, my gripe is the poll shouldn't even exist. It's just unprofessional. Maybe they just didn't have anything better to do.

Meanwhile, I am still going to bitch about the low-quality games they try to pawn off. How am I supposed to respect the opinions/reviews of a site that caters such trash?

Being a site dedicated to PocketPC gaming doesn't necessitate fanfare for every Tetris clone that appears. As the PocketPC Gaming industry matures, so should the site content.

So far, the site has alot of catching up to do.

PC GAMER Magazine doesn't splash "Who Wants to be a Millionaire: PC edition" on it's cover. Hell no, their is BIGGER news out their. News about the latest Unreal Tournament II engine- news I can use.

PocketPC gaming has alot on the horizon, and they should be looking forward to the great games to come.

I guess I am expecting too much. Maybe we are just too avantgarde for the standard PocketPC gamer.

PocketQuake is not just a technical achievement. It is the future of handheld gaming. This is just the beginning.
