Quake error message

Quake error message

Postby Henry Allen » Apr 8, 2001 @ 8:08pm

I downloaded pocket quake onto my ipaq following the (complicated) instructions. It appears to have installed properly, but when I try to start it the following error message appears - 'You must have the registered version to use modified games'.

Your help requested

If you are using the pak0.pak from the special jornada pocketquake site, it won't work, you need to download the shareware version from this site.

Complicated? I was going to suggest an installer, but then remembered the pak file.

You know, I think the hardest part of the instructions for me was unzipping the pak file :) Since I downloaded it straight onto my PPC, I kinda forgot that it was gzipped (and file explorer doesn't show the gzip extension, I know I could have used a different explorer, but they're so slow).....

I think we should write a definitive FAQ for every single siuation that could happen when trying to install PocketQuake that way... well, no one would read that one either, nevermind :)
Yeah... I normally don´t read readme files, ;) so I just unzipped the pak 2 times... when it got to 17mb I finally discovered that something was wrong...

Diego Cueva

I always read readme files, this saves me from asking stupid questions like 'where's the gfx.wad?! I can't find it!' Even then, if I still don't figure it out, I search for a FAQ to see if the question has already been asked so I don't look like an ass, like half the people who come to this board first, without reading the readme file of the FAQ, and asking questions that have been answered about 1500 times. I don't mind answering questions that aren't in the FAQ (i.e. How do I use custom maps?; Is Moose really 16?; How do I use bots?; etc.) But it gets old real fast seeing the gfx.wad question daily on this board. :)

He may be 15, I'm not sure. If he says he's in Algebra II Honors, that's usually a Freshman highschool class, SOMEtimes a sophomore class... so he's either 15 or 16, that's my guess anyway.

I have used the right version of the pak0.pak file (i.e. downloaded from this site) but quake will not start. Any other suggestions as to why I get that particular error message?

I said next year, meaning 17. And I already have the documentation on it, legal bilaws and such, which the principal has signed saying that I can. Did I tell you how pathetic my school was, becuse I thought I did. I'm trying to get out of there as fast as I can.

no hurry moose, you only get to go to highschool once... unless, you have a lot of money and free time.

henry- did you read the faq? Did you follow the instructions on how to install it? Do you have a pocketpc? do you have gapi 1.2 (gx.dll)? do you have the quake folder in the root directory of your ppc or your storage card? do you have an id1 folder inside the quake folder? do you have the executable? do you have autoexec.cfg and pak0.pak in the id1 folder? Did you unzip the pak0.pak.gz.zip before putting it on your PPC? Did you download the correct Version of PQ for your device?
If any of those are no, then you screwed up somewhere.

You'd think differently if you went to my highschool. I go to stores at my local mall, clerks ask me (small talk... ugh) what school I go to, I say MySchool HighSchool, they say "Oh, I'm sorry." Literally, I'm not joking around. They say that exact thing, and it's happened more than once. Come to my town, go to my school, I'll show you around. The only thing my school is good for is smoking out in the bathroom and having orgies in the sound proof band practice rooms. Both of which I find offensive. I'm a good Christian... well, I'm not a bad one anyway.
