No, no, this is an important discussion Dave. I mean, "C:" is from the old DOS times. We can´t exclude it from our lives only because MS wants. This is wrong, wrong, wrong!... I want "C:" back!
I´m tired... :)

Diego Cueva

it kinda looks like a linux root, with no prefix, its just "\" as opposed to "/".
But for microsoft, i think that its a complete lack of taste to deny us of our right to "C:".

Well, it's not a root dir "\". I just use that to denote the top most level in the device. It's actually "My Device", such as "My Computer."

C:\ is designated by the OS, not the hardware or bios. So it isn't necessarily a hard drive. The OS can designate that as a ramdrive, CD-ROM, etc. if you really wanted to force the issue.

Which is why the Linux/Unix root looks different even though the hardware is exactly the same.

For normalities sake, the MS-DOS based OSes designate it as the first harddrive on the system.

for consistencies sake, Microsoft should have done that.

Since this is a new OS and they were able to basically "start over" from scratch, I guess they felt that eliminating features [we were so comfortable with] was the way to go.

I'm still pissed they hide extensions from us.

Argh! They hide "C:", they hide extensions, they hide the "hidden files". In their new CE OS will them hide the app icons too? Argh!

Diego Cueva

Last modification: Diego Cueva - 04/17/01 at 02:36:35

They don't hide the "c:\". It is just given a more "user friendly" name.

"user friendly" my ass.
