iPaq Benchmark needed

iPaq Benchmark needed

Postby Dan East » Apr 15, 2001 @ 11:57pm

Hi guys. I need someone with an iPaq to run a quick PQ 0.051 benchmark, so I can compare it with 0.06. Please use a completely empty autoexec.cfg file so that all defaults are used. Make an autoexec.cfg that contains only:
timedemo demo1.dem

Make sure your device isn't overclocked! Also do a soft reset before the test. Please post the results here.
Thanks!!

Dan East

LOL. I'd do a benchmark for my Casio, but it's 180MHz and wouldn't be a true rating. I believe the iPaq ran at around 10FPS in .0051

Hello,
I have run the benchmark on an IPAQ pocket PC.
Here is the result:
98.9 frames in 102.7 seconds
that makes 9.4 FPS

So Dan, how does that compare to the latest build?

Unfortunately there's not much increase. Around .2 FPS. Here's why; Jacco's optimization took out the perspective correction (causing the warped walls). By omitting some of the basic rendering work Quake had to do the FPS jumped by ~1.0. 0.06 includes a new fixed point conversion that increases the FPS by a little more than what the perspective correction costs (I converted the perspective routines to fixed point and added them back in). The warped walls are not at all acceptable, but I couldn't correct it at the cost of reducing the overall FPS (no one would stand for that).

I'm working on another major fixed point conversion for 0.07. I really hope this will increase FPS by at least 2-3. In this conversion model and texture vectors will be converted to fixed point at the time they are loaded, and stay integer all the way through the rendering. Beyond that I've not identified any other areas that represent a substantially large enough chunk of the rendering work to really benefit from a fixed point conversion.

Dan East

Hmmm I only get 8.7 fps (969 frames in 110.8 seconds).

I deleted all of the contents of autoexec.cfg and put in the single line of demo1.dem, then did a soft reset then ran PQ. Only thing running was File Explorer.....

Cheers,

Steve

I get from 9.2 to 9.5. What did you get with 0.51?

Dan East

Just tried the 051 beta and got:

969 frames in 111.7 seconds - 8.7 FPS again.

All I'm doing is copying the files over, removing it from its cradle (so it's running off battery) then soft reset, File Explorer, run the PQ .exe file.

Cheers,

Steve

It looks like your iPaq is a little under par performance-wise (around 5%). :( You didn't underclock it did you?

Dan East

No, I haven't underclocked it. Anyway, just out of interest, I just did a Hard reset and have re-done the 06 beta benchmark.

I now get: 969 frames in 104.4 seconds - 9.3 fps.

That sounds a bit better, doesn't it? Odd though as I had nothing running. Maybe I had a different gx.dll or something...

Cheers,

Steve

Maybe you need to free up some program memory on your device.

Even though the FPS may not have increased much in the latest build, the straight wall textures make a substantial difference.

The custom maps are better than ever. Has anyone played the SP game lately, just to see how playable it is?

Dan, you mentioned something about the game crashing after spawning in dmmuseum. I can't seem to reproduce the crash.
