Pocket Quake 0.06 released

Pocket Quake 0.06 released

Postby Dan East » Apr 16, 2001 @ 12:11pm

Hi guys. PQ 0.06 is now available for ARM and MIPS devices. The MIPS build is untested. I have not yet received info on the SH3 specific compiler settings discovered by Jay (and Yoda), so the SH3 build will be delayed a couple of days at most.

Please see the Readme.Txt file for details about what's new and changed. The biggest change (IMO) is that the walls are perfectly straight as they should be. It also runs faster, and has some other additions and fixes.

Let me know how the MIPS build works!

http://www.pocketmatrix.com/pocketquake/download.html

Dan East

Last modification: Dan East - 04/16/01 at 09:11:47

Wow, it looks great now. I'll have to take some new screenshots of my map and post them onthe webapage.

It works on MIPS, except when I try to switch video modes via the menu. It will switch into those modes, but I can't get the menu to go away. It says "Press Enter to Set Mode, ESC to Exit" but for some reason neither work.

It could be my funky configuration file messing everything up- so I'll mess with it some more.

Glad it works alright for MIPS. I don't know what cfg file was being used for MIPS devices (included is the same autoexec.cfg that came with 0.051). A key needs to be bound to "togglemenu" to hide the menu once in landscape mode. We use Record (AUX5) on the iPaq. Actually, AUX5 must be used for that purpose, because normally key bindings don't work in menus, and I had to add in a work around for AUX5.

Dan East

Yeah, my configuration screwed it up. It should be :

bind AUX5 "togglemenu"

Like Dan said. I had it set to something else.
Maybe it was just a one time occurance. Try again. Maybe you've got some type of expansion card that drains your battery. Weird

There's no way PQ could run your battery down any faster than it did before. It has always maxed out your CPU, so there's nothing more it can do to kill your batteries. :)

Dan East

Ok, in toggling video modes on the Casio EM-500, how do I bind a key to "togglemenu"? And is AUX5 the tasks button on the EM-500?

I don't know what hardware key AUX5 represents on any device but the iPaq.
To bind it, edit the autoexec.cfg file so it contains:
bind AUX5 "togglemenu"

There may already be a binding for AUX5. If so, just modify it so it reads as above.

Dan East

I've noticed an issue with 0.06. On occasion when using Randall's Deathmatch Museum map, PQ will crash when the player spawns. I'm looking into it.

Dan East

The hardware button I want to use is AUX2, which is the tasks button on the side. I edited autoexec.cfg, and made AUX2 from "menu_save" to "togglemenu", but it didn't work for getting out of the video mode thing. I then tried making it "quit", "exit", "menu", "toggle_menu", and "esc", but none worked. HELP!! The new top banner is nice for volume, exiting, and minizing, but it takes up space on the screen (and I don't think it looks "Quake-ish"). Plus, landscape mode makes the screen huge! I can't figure out how to get out of the video mode screen. HELP!! Thanks.

At this time you have to use AUX5 for ToggleMenu. Technically, you cannot use key bindings in Menus. That is a Quake limitation. I modified it to allow AUX5 bindings to stick even in the menus. The tradeoff is that you cannot reassign AUX5 using the control configuration menu. I don't know how many people use the settings menu to reassign keys (less hardcore people I'm sure), or I would allow them all to be bound for the menus.

The game area is the exact same size in this release as it has been for all the previous releases. The height of the game area is determined by the width - they are at a specific ratio.

999 is in the process of redesigning the control skin as well. While it currently looks Quakish, it also, as 999 describes it, looks like mud. He's trying to come up with something with higher visibility that still has a Quake look to it.

Personally I'm a bit tired of 50 shades of black and brown. That's one of the reasons I like Randall and FCorp's custom maps so much.

Dan East

I love the color skin control thing at the bottom, because it goes perfectly with Quake. The bad thing is that AUX5 is not a hardware key on the EM-500, so there's no way to get out of the video mode selection screen. There should be an "ok" button on the screen to press to get out of that screen. Us MIPS people will not tolerate being discriminated by you ARMS people! MIPS people have the same rights! And we deserve to play Quake in landscape mode! We are tired of seeing games released, but only for ARMS, and have to wait weeks until the MIPS version is out (Chopper Alley for example). The MIPS people will revolt! Viva la revolution!

Another issue. This one I didn't get around to finishing. I was trying to get PQ out before I went to bed last night, and I ended up forgetting about it. The clock won't update. So obviously there'll be a 0.061 bug-fix release coming out in the next couple of days. So if it seems like time stands still while you play PQ, well, it really does. :)

Also, I'm afraid the clock will not update on the MIPS devices, even after I fix it, because of the weird MIPS Game API behavior (same problem that causes the SIP to not appear).

Dan East
