What other PC games have been ported to Pocket PC?

I'd still rather have Descent 1. If Descent 1 is similar to Quake, then can the person who made PocketQuake port Descent 1? Thanks

You do realise that it's not a matter of say "I'll port this or that game." Number one, you need the Source. Number two, you need to understand the source. Number three, you need to change display routines, user input, and mucho other things. Number four, you have to optimize a great deal. Number five, when it doesn't work you need to debug. Number six, when it works but it's slow you need to debug more.
Go pick up a C++ book at your library, then download the source and have MS Ship you their eMbedded tools for free. You try. I'm sure real programmers get really peeved when people just keep whining, we want this and that for me me me.

Yes, the PPC does need some of those games. I would think that companies would start porting low spec games to PPC so they could get some profit. Most people probably wont buy Descent for PC for $30+ (maybe some people) but, people would pay $30 for the PPC version, am I right?

I'm not sure that I would pay $30 for decent on PPC, but I'd be far far more willing to pay something for it on PPC before a PC. The problem is, there are no where near as many PPC users. Depending on the game, it may just not be worth the port.

Alright, I was just reading about porting the SCUMM engine, and all I can say is that I would devote a cult to anyone who could make it possible for me to play Sam&Max on my iPAQ.

How are the Compaq iPaq's? I bought a EM-500 the other day and I'm very disapointed in the memory. Other than the memory, this thing has to be one of the best! If they just had a Compact Flash slot instead of MMC and made it possible to take 128MB cards, it would be the best, in my opninon that is.

The EM is the best thing you can get on the market right now, for the price that is.

Regarding the memory, yes, that and the mmc feature are reasons I opted for an iPAQ. I've read there is an EM-700 or something similar in Japan which has more onboard RAM, don't quote me on that tho.

As far as the iPAQ is concerned, I've been overly pleased with it. It seems with each new addon I buy, I love it even more than the day I got it.

I literally have a laptop in my front two pant pockets. Nokia 8290 (wireless web) and a Stowaway (folding keyboard) in the left pocket, and in the right pocket, an iPAQ 3630 in a modded leather case with a CFexpansion board embedded in the leather :) It's got a 340meg Microdrive in the bay (hey 340 was a lot a year ago :P ).

As sad as this sounds, I'm not far from my favorite messageboards and ICQ/AIM/YIM contacts (via JabberCE) no matter where I venture :D It's all about answering business emails in the lines at Disney Land 8)

Last modification: 999 - 03/23/01 at 19:19:51

When do you think the iPAQ's will take a price drop? I'll think about getting one of those in the near future. How are the Casio E-125's? Are thy as good as the iPAQ?

Casio's aren't as fast as iPaq's, except in the 2D graphics displaying and things like that. Casio's tend to excel in areas that involve the screen. E-125 comes with a larger screen, it's brighter, more vibrant, and has more colors. iPaqs use 12bit screens, Casios have a 16bit screen. I wouldn't trade my Casio for anything, but it's all a matter of taste. iPaq was my first choice, but after playing with one at BestBuy I decided all those sleeves weren't as good and the screen wasn't what I wanted. the Nice d-Pad and button arrangement on the Casio's was also a plus.

I got the em-500 and was very pleased and still am. i love the screen look and just the way it feels in my hand. and since it came with a free 28mb memory card, that tipped me over the edge.

Its great, i love it, merci casio, but the lack of hardware accesoris (this isn't a spelling contest) through the mmc card slot has been a downer, now if casio made it have a compact flash slot and mmc slot i would be even more giddy then a school girl. don't get me wrong i still love it no dout, but if only....

Well, since the MIPS devices excel at 2D processing and pong requires direct memory writes in the range of nill I'd say that Pong would run at 100FPS on Casio E-125 and 89 FPS on iPaq. I'm sure you can tell the difference. Phat, as soon as I start programming, the first thing I'll do is practice with a Pong game for PPCs... so you can finally quit whinning about it ;D

Moose:

I love these benchmark numbers you come up with ;)

I understand the casio can draw 2D rather well, the same was said about the Saturn vs the Sony playstation when it came to 2D vs 2D, but we both saw streetfighter on both machines, and BOTH ran exceptionally well.

Even if the casio is a smidgen faster in 2D, the iPAQ is still running a faster clock speed, hence making up any difference with brute force.

IMHO, I think 2D runs the same on both devices, whether its dispaying emulated or non-emulated 2D. Take a look at Turjah, PowWow, and PocketNES on both devices for example, the proof is in the pudding :D
