McAfee reports a virus on pak zip file?

When I try to unzip the pak file downloaded on Friday from the zip file I get a virus warning on the file. Other downloads are ok ( the iPaq ARM PocketQuake and the source )

McAfee does not give a virus name & I have deleted the zip file just to be sure.

Is there a problem with this download?

Ian

The file has not been modified in any way. If it has a virus it would be from ID software. I doubt that they would let a virus sneek into a download, so I bet it's just your virus software playing games with you.

I don't think anyone that has downloaded it has a virus from the pak file :).

Hope that helps.

It sounds like something is wrong with McAfee. If you haven't downloaded a new virus data file lately then you should. That may fix the problem. The fact that it does not give you any specific information why it doesn't like the pak file probably indicates a problem with McAfee.

Dan East

Paul, It's the pak file on the Pocket Quake download page which McAfee did not like:-

PAK0.PAK File (Required to Play): Download (8.5mb)
pak0.pak.gz.zip

I downloaded the Pocket Quake app, the source and the pak file. Only the pak file reported a virus.
It was downloaded around 5pm GMT on Friday.

I have an up-to-date McAfee virus scan 4.5
I don't like virus protection programs, theyve always slowed down my computer and tell me it's time to download another update pack every hour and they never really do anything but tell you some perfectly fine has a deadly virus from 10 years ago on it, yet they never catch new viruses until after they have affected your system. and the odds of actually getting a virus these days is slim, unless you own a porn or warez cartel, or you actually accept mail attachments from strangers..... :)

Yeah, but we get hundreds of emails a day at our house from clients, candidates and complete strangers (it's not junkmail). Some of these people don't have anti-virus software for one reason or another. They are the ones that pass on the virus.

So we recieve a different virus every other day, from different people in different parts of the world. It's normal and we accept it as normal routine. Fortunately we have Norton AV 2001 and never experienced a single virus-related problem.

So maybe "abstinence" works for Jaybot, but in the business world, AV software is a necessity for the desktop/laptop PC. I agree it sucks, but ignoring it doesn't make it go away.

It will really suck when viruses are finally written for PPC. Like I want to waste valuable space on AV protection.

Last modification: randall - 05/01/01 at 15:35:25

What suspicions were those, Moose? That I'm actually a gay black man named "Carter" living in Manhattan?

Last modification: randall - 05/01/01 at 15:46:18

since i started in the warez/moviez/dreamcastz scene i've only gotten one virus and that was actually from an MIRC client, LoK has a trojan in it if you download the one from there site. :) i don't download from non-trustworthy people.
