Add on keyboard game control for iPAQ.

Add on keyboard game control for iPAQ.

Postby Zathras » Jun 24, 2001 @ 4:46pm

Is an add on keyboard a viable game controller for the iPAQ?

I think Russ Smith said the Targus Stowaway folding keyboard had a delay that made it bad for games.

I don't think I've heard comments on the Ibiz KeySync.

Whenever I get an iPAQ I'll probably get a keyboard so I may as well get one that helps play games.

To clarify, I guess my real question is does adding a keyboard get around the iPAQ's dreaded only one button push at a time problem?

Zathras, you can play just fine with a stowaway, although for a game that uses an Mlook feature, it's virtually pointless. Right of the bat, the iPAQ is the most playable, and truest to the analog control of the PC version.

The iPAQ's button problem does not come into play with the way PQ is setup.

I vouche for that, even though I own a Casio. The iPAQ is superior when it comes to pocketQuake, and the buttons don't hinder it a bit.

That's good to know.

I've seen screenshots of PocketQuake. It looks like mlook, weapons selection, fire, and jump are handled by screentapping. Looks like the programmers did a great job.

Seems to me you could use extra buttons for fire, weapon select, jump, and just use the screen for mouselook.

Of course, no one wants to carry around a keyboard all the time. The keyboard would be an added luxury for when you weren't on the move or until Compaq realizes that some people want to be able to push more than one button at the same time (is this that hard to understand Compaq?).

Using the keyboard for first person games is natural to me now anyway.

Thanks for the reply.

A PPC mouse? Now that's silly :)

I wouldnt mind something like the laptops have, the little eraser stub in the middle of the keyboard.

I hate those "IBM" eraser stubs. I like the touchpads that seem to be the industry standard.

Yeah touchpads are cool. But I have this weird friend who cannot use them b/c it does not pickup him. I think he may be Undead or something. He can wipe his whole hand or arm onto the touchpad and nothing happens.

Yeah, I don't know how touchpads work exactly. I have a huge electral charge throughout my body (I magnetize analog watches and they stop working) and my hands are always warm and dry.

Needless to say I could probably hover my hands over it and it would pick it up.

Hey randall, were you abducted by aliens? Because when I was I was able to change the channels on the TV by raising or lowering my hand. My hand also left a glowing spot on my monitor whenever I touched it and things like door handles and metal pens seemed to move towards me when I was just about to pick them up. But it's quit now... :(

Let me make a diagram as to how i believe touch screens work:
0000000000000
0000000000000
0000000000000
0000000000000
0000000000000
0000000000000
0000000000000

OK, then entire screen area is open. You haven't touched anything. Now you touch the center of the screen

0000000000000
0000000000000
0000000000000
0000001111111
1111111111111
1111111111111
1111111111111

It closes that curcuit in the center, which doesn't allow the current to loop back after that point. So it knows, depending on which jumper/diode/whatever they're called is closed. That's my theory. Now... what if we divide those last 1's by the first 0's? ;D

your speculation seems pretty sketchy there, Moose.

Seriously, if I wear an analog watch, it will will just STOP after a day or so. Even if it is self winding. The second hand just kind of ticks back and forth instead of sweeping around 360 degrees.

When I take it off, the watch will resume working after a couple hours.

Last modification: randall - 06/25/01 at 11:08:47

No, my mom has the exact same problem, and think my grandmother does too. It doesn't affect digital watches since they don't have the clockwork mechanism.

It's one of those weird things, like when people can recieve radio signals through the fillings in their teeth and actually HEAR the station music.
