Larry B., aka Bitbank, aka Mr.Performance and Mr.HiveCE is the Author for the HPC Gapi which you are referring to.

He's also the author of the MS Arcade Packs which were released, Pacman, Ms.Pacman, and DigDug. Remember, DigDug is using 3 processors, meaning Larry has to emulate all three of those in his code (yep, he's using a CE version of his HiVE engine), and it runs fullspeed WITH SOUND! Nothing beats DigDug music.

You can contact Larry via his Programming messageboard over at Brighthand (come.. Come to the Dark Side Larry, I am your Fatha...). I wish I could program, he'd be a great asset to tap into if you're heavily into writing emulators, or anything which would require a great deal of speed.

Y'know, it would be nice if Larry would donate a copy of his Gapi to Trarman or Dan. I mean the hpc is going to have to use it anyway so why not do some kind of trade-off? Like next to the HPC download link, have a "Powered by Bitbank Gapi" link to his site.

Where can I find out the sales numbers for the various Pocket PC platforms?

There's been over 1M Compaq iPaqs sold and I'm thinking that's the most popular of all the Pocket PC devices. What about the others?

The reason I'm asking this in this thread is can a developer expect a substantial return on his investment if he develops for a platform like the HP-720? You'll need to buy at least one device for Q/A testing (perhaps two if you want to test networked devices). The hardware costs 2x what other Pocket PC devices cost and now you're also going to have to pay for the GAPI library.

Is it worth it? Who is the typical HP-720 user? What sort of games would they be willing to buy? How many 720 devices are out there?

This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but it provides an indicator regarding the ratio of device types out there, and which ones are used (or are better for) gaming.
Here's the breakdown of Pocket Quake downloads by device type. Of course this only includes Pocket PCs, but I'm certain that other devices, such as the 720, would only constitute a single percent at most.
Also note that these are version 0.061 downloads, which was before @migo's were readily available, so the ARM category would be 99.9% iPaq users.
[fixed]
ARM: 55%
MIPS: 25%
SH3: 20%
[/fixed]
Dan East

Last modification: Dan East - 06/22/01 at 10:31:23

There was an article recently printed in Game Developer, that discussed writing games for multiple platforms. It was basically about Mac, but it can apply to ANY platform.

In a nutshell, if the code is well written and portable, it can be easily ported to another platform without wasting alot of resources. This guy was talking about porting a game in a matter of days- sometimes hours, which seemed awfully fast turnaround to me.

By making the game available to a wider audience, it more than made up for the cost of porting it. It also didn't require any additional marketing since it piggybacked on the PC or Playstation release.

Last modification: randall - 06/22/01 at 10:56:48
