newbie question - out of memory errors

newbie question - out of memory errors

Postby Gary » Aug 8, 2001 @ 11:13am

hi - newbie here - i'm itching to play the game on my ipaq - i keep getting the quake error message, "not enough memory free; check disk space" i moved the 8.5 meg pak file from main memory to the storage card per the read me file, to no avail. i do get a "boot up" screen, which is a 1/2 blank screen and 1/2 attack, jump, menu, etc. screen. any help would be grealy appreciated - and if possible, please also mail to me at gbgesq@earthlink.net - thank you very much!

You don't have enough free program memory. Go into the Memory properties in the Settings control panel and make sure you've got atleast 12 megs free on the memory side. You can move the slider to readjust the amount. But if you don't have enough you may have to uninstall some programs from main memory and move more onto a storage card.

Ok, here are my responces, choose which one you like best.

1. Read the darn readme file which say how much mem you need you dumb @$$.
2. I would recomend at least 12 megs free, I like to give it 16-18 (16 is the most the engine will take advantage of).
3. Buy an IPaq with more memory.
4. Buy a jornada 720. It is the best out there <ROB grins hopping newbie will come to the dark side of handheld devices and buy an HPC2000>
5. Stick your head in a blender for a minute. When you pull it out, you'll be so happy that your alive, you won't care if Quake works.
6. Rewrite quake so that is averages 30 fps on demo one, and uses only 1 meg of ram.
7. Devide your mem by 0 so you have more than enough to run Quake.
To do this, simply find the line of code that gets the pointer to the memory amount and add this line.
mem = mem / 0 (change mem, to the real variable).
8 Send me 1,000 dollars. What, you don't have my address, well if you smart enough to not need the readme file, then you should be able to find out where I live without any problems.

This responce is brought to you by the good people at hpcgamer.org. We are the bet when it comes to porting programs to the HPC2000.

I wanted to be the first to reply. That always happens, you think your the one giving the answer, and someone has already posted an answer before you.
