Wee bit hard to see on an ipaq

Wee bit hard to see on an ipaq

Postby Kev » Aug 20, 2001 @ 4:58pm

Hello folks,

just a wee note to ask if you can improve the visibility of the game on an ipaq? It's a wee bit washed out looking. Quite hard to see whats going on. Is this because of the limited colour depth of the ipaq, or general limitations of the machine?

Apart from that, absolutely unbelieveable to see this game running! Fantastic. Totally blew my mate's heads off at the weekend when I showed them. We could remember going round to a friends house, who had just got a P90, while we were at Uni with a demo of quake just before it was released. We sat trembling in front of the screen waiting for it to start after spending ages mucking around with config and autoexec files to get the memory right. The when it came up.... wow!!

pretty much the same reaction 8 years on with this one!!

Cheers

kev

that'd be cool of i could watch video on my palm... i could just put my hand (palm) up to my face and start watching the matrix... people would think i'm blocking the sun from my eye's or something, but that's their problem.. not mine.

Oh no, he read the top secret level mod post. AHHHHHHHHHHH. Oh wait, the sript was never posted, was it. But he knows the ending. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo. Why did I have to ask if we are looking at Band (I purpasly spelled it this way) getting it on, or looking at M and Q. Now he knows that Band saves the girl. Oh wait, that is just like every other Band movie. Well, at least he doesn't know about eh giant muffin ;)

>>"It's the limited color depth (4096 colors)."

Actually, it has more to do with the screen contrast ratio. Quake is only 256 colors! The contrast ratio of all reflective displays is very low, except in direct sunlight (then it looks very colorful). The contrast of a backlit indoor display such as Casio is much better but very terrible in the sunlight.

You can see that the Palm m505 65536 colors (iPaq style reflective technology) look FAR WORSE than the Palm IIIc 256 colors (Casio style backlit technology). See? Clear evidence of that fact!

Yeah, reflective LCD's are a tradeoff. It depends on what your priorities are - ability to use outdoors, the primary use as a PDA, etc.

But Quake's palette of 256 colors is chosen out of a possible 65k+ colors, right? Since Quake uses so many shades of dark brown whose color values are very close together, several different shades end up rendered as the same color when converted to 12 bit.
What is needed is for someone to modify that palette for better 12 bit separation.

Dan East
