Quake for Win CE 2.11 on a HPC SH3 hamdheld

Quake for Win CE 2.11 on a HPC SH3 hamdheld

Postby London Rep » Aug 1, 2001 @ 6:10am

What we need is Quake for windows CE version 2.11 on a HPC with an SH3 processor, specifically for the HP Journada 680/690 . Come on , If I have seen quake run succesfully on an old crappy 386 computer from log ago, it can surely take on 103megahertz on an hpc, nothings is impossible, this must be done! Please. there are no REAL games for HPC if this would come out for it, it sure would be something.

Quake never ran on a 386, but it did run on the high-end 486.

Those comps also had a math coprocessor. BTW, (and I've always wanted to say this after I have been told it so many times), the source is avalible, so go ahead and make your dreams come true.

None of the pre Pentium processors had math coprocessors. Atleast not floating point coprocessors, and I think integers were built in. But whatever, it doesn't really matter.

There was a 387, which is a coprocessor for a 386. I had one in my (very old) computer, I think. That's how I know. I have the manual/installation guide still.

Yeah, the 386 and 486 line had math co-processors.

I have a 386 and 486 running right now, so I think I can tell you what will and won't run on them. And I can tell you whether or not they could handle a math coprocessor. I even have a fully functioning 286.

Indeed the co-processor for the 386 was a 387. There have been rumors that the 387 was in fact a fully functioning CPU, and the 386 was disabled when the 387 was installed.

All the Intel processors since the 086 have had the posibility of adding an optional math coprocessor for speeding up the floating point instructions. I installed one for my old 386. All the Intel processors since the 486 had the math coprocessor build-in except the 486SX, still optional. Who says this is not truth better talk about other stuff.
My C-Series HPC has a MIPS R3912 at 75Mhz with a math coprocessor build-in. This kind of chip is faster than an equivalent 486 because of its RISC nature. In my opinion, the only reason for which there are not enought 3D games in these platforms is because there's not enought interest by qualified developers and then not enought qualified developers programming them (or qualified developers don't spend their time). The same fact happens with the Mac's and linux compared to the PC's. The PocketPC's and HPC's have more than enought power to play 'good enought' 3D games with textures. 'TombRaider I' ran on a 486 for example (believe me, I tried it), Quake 1 too. And even the resolution is low (it can be just like a MCGA at 320x200). I have even seen 3D games for the 286's, which is a 16bit processor with less than 640kb of RAM and no math coprocessor by default. . .
I even made a 3D Engine for my 386 which could handle 14,000 triangles at high resolution with dithered gouraud shading at about 1fps (many more at low resolutions and triangles). It required a math coprocessor.

That's all I had to say (and I had to say it!!!).

see you

Ok guys, I know that is what everyone needs. A way to frag monsters when you get lectured by your boss. So, here is the deal, you find me the video buffer of the device you want quake ported to, and I'll compile a version of my 720 source code to work with the 680. Deal?

I ran the diagnosics program on my 680. I tested the VRAM and it started testing at b2000000. Is this the info you are looking for?

Me, having just inhereted (sp?) a Jornada 680 from my uncle (founder of paypal!) I would like that port also. If you succeed, try and make it offical.

Thanks,
me_not_u_me

Rob, you'll also have to provide a complete stdio library, both for Quake and for the gZip compression library.

Dan East

Hi,

Does this mean that Quake won't work on an 690 Jornada and also does anyone know whether Doom works on a Jornada 690?
