Quake 2 Ported to Pocket PC

Re: Quake 2 Ported to Pocket PC

Here's another screenshot. This is off of my iPaq. I estimate it's around 3 fps, but I expect that to at least double with optimizations, etc. Probably not for the first release though. :) Being that Christmas is right around the corner there may be a delay. I started on this around 9PM last night, and got it working around 5 AM or so, and still haven't slept. :) So, I don't know how much time I can spend on this to hunt down a few bad bugs so I can release it. Hopefully before the end of this week.

Image

Dan East

[sup][color=blue]Last modification: Dan East - 12/23/01 at 16:17:12

I'd love to help, although I'm basically a weekend programmer. I think I'd rather see sound added to Wolf3D and the source released though.

Hey Dan how do you manage to port all this great id software before everyone else? How long have you been programming for?

At what time were we losing the war?

Dan could almost have a career as a PPC game porter, with big companies paying him to port their older games.

To me this makes alot of sense. Someone still owns the license and intellectual property to these games, and most of them have seen stagnant to non-existent sales for quite a while. The content is already there ready to recycled to a new platform.

I'm not talking about games by id software, which already provides (free) source to their older stuff. I'm talking about a company giving Dan an exclusive deal to port a game.

wow, now that it runs on PocketPC, all that remains is to find some shred of a reason to play it on PocketPC. I'm not trying to knock your work here, Dan. As a programming exercise, this is an amazing milestone. But seriously, I don't have to elaborate on why a 4 inch screen and wonky pda controls suck the life out of 3d action games. Besides, as many hours as I've tossed away playing games like Q2 online, the last thing I need to be doing is pretending it's fun to "play" it on a train on an iPaq. Harldy a real "Palm-killer", since the mainstream pda market will largely ignore this admirable science project.

Speak for yourself, it's slow as hell for me. At least we haven't gotten a bunch of morons on here shouting "D00d, port it to linux, Windoze sux!"

Except for Chris, of course. <grin>
