Root beer!?!

Root beer!?!

Postby Malmer » Aug 14, 2001 @ 12:47am

Ok, this is a question to all you americans...

After spending serious amount of time playing Monkey Island 1 and 2 I was stuck with the question: "WHAT IS ROOT BEER".

Now, last year I finally found one of those cans in sweden and tried the soft-drink, as it appeared to be. The thing tasted awfull, don't think I even finished it.

Now just recently me and my friend saw some of those cans again, and bought one each. This time we asked a guy who was from america how you were supposed to drink it. Because as it is it tastes like bubblegum or something.

He said you should mix it with ice-cream. We did, and it was a little bit better. But it was still awfull!

How can you guys drink that stuff? Howcome there even is such a product? Eeeew!!! No wonder you can blast a undead pirate into millions of pieces with that stuff!

Depends what brand it is. Thomas Kemper makes one of the best Root Beers around (as well as plain ol' BEER).

Also depends on what you are drinking out of. Bottles are the best vessels. Normally we just drink it like a coke, but Root Beer floats are pretty damn good too.

I've tried a lot of Root Beer, and I think the best has to be Root 66. It's got a fantastic taste to it, a good body, and a great smell when you first pop the cap. Some friends brought me some Thomas Kemper from Colorado, and I'd place it at a close second, followed by Dominion here in Virginia (like T.K., it's got honey in it, mmmmmm). After that it has to fall to IBC, and then maybe A&W, Doc's, or Mug. Barq's is at the bottom--that stuff tastes like soap.

You know, it's interesting that you feel that way, Luciano. Do a lot of Brazilians dislike root beer? I know that Mexicans can't stand it in general, most of them think it tastes like medicine. That was the worst part of my trip there with my ex-girlfriend, who was from a small town called Bacalar: no root beer, for three weeks. Oh, the agony.

So maybe it's just one of those bizarre American things. Someone should hunt up the history of root beer and find out the roots (pardon the pun) of this discrepancy.

Yeah, root beer varies quite a bit by brand. Putting Ice cream in rootbeer gives you the infamous "Root Beer Float". Now I'm going to have to get one today... :)

Dan East

I spent 4 years in the US as a child and never developed the taste to like it (and boy did I try to like the stuff). In fact, I've never known a Brazilian that tasted root beer and liked it. Everybody says it tastes like medicine. And here we have guaraná, that in my opinion tastes like medicine too. Maybe it's a genetic thing, who knows?
;)

I used to ride my bicycle from Bellevue to the now defunct Thomas Kemper Brewery on Bainbridge Island. If you think their root beer is good in the bottle you should try it right out of the tap. It's unbelievably delicious. Their Birch Beer is pretty good too.

I remember when I was doing a lot of work in what was the USSR years ago, we found out that the soviets didn't have a taste for peanut butter. They would get just a little taste of it and a few of them would immediately start vomiting. I suppose it's what you get used to as a kid. The same thing happens to me when I try to eat vegemite.

Kind of like those African countries, where they eat caterpillars out of a can, or in Scotland, where haggis survives for God only knows what reason. People are strange.

Thomas, you know we're not hispanic, right? ;) Anyway, I didn't know hispanics didn't like root beer either.
Peanut butter is another american favorite that we don't like also. Don't ask me why, but I grew up in the US (I first learned to read and right English before I did Portuguese) and never liked root beer or peanut butter. It's funny because I know a lot of Americans that like guaraná (but I hate it - tastes like sweet medicine with bubbles).

To be honest, I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to refer to Brazilians. Is there a politically correct term, or should I just call you "Brazilians?"

lol
First thing first: I'm not American, so it's not so necessary to be politically correct 100% of the time :)
Brazil was colonized by Portugal, and not Spain, so we don't speak Spanish. Our Portugues is a little different then that spoken by our colonizers (like American and British English, but with more vocabulary differnces).
You can refer to us as Brazilians so that you'll be politically, geographically and historically correct.
lol
I wonder if Portugues like root beer and peanut butter...
