If I'm not mistaken, you only use decimal OR comma. The decimal in 405.001 only serves to make it easier to read. If you had a fraction, lets say 405001,01, you should write it 405001.01 or 405001,01 and never 405.001,01. Here in Brazil we have a kind of codex (ABNT if Diego doesn't remember) that normatizes this kind of thing. For us brazilians the correct way to write it would be 405001,01. I assume other countrys have something similar. I know every technical publication has norms for publication, and most of them follow some kind of international norm for units, abbreviations, etc.

Yeah, I can say that in all my time in engineering undergrad, I never really saw an instance where both commas and periods were used.

But, for the sake of curiosity, it was a worthy question I think.

Turnip my friend, you'll notice these threads tend to run wild here. You start with "How can I avoid scratches?" and usually end up with a discussion about Star Wars or soccer or Friends. Can't complain that Pm isn't eclectic.
:D

Weird, commas instead of periods. I mean,,,,Weird. commas instead of periods,

Well, i can tell you that in the dental field we use both metric and the current whatever-you-call it system. It can get confusing. Sometimes reading a number that says 0.34 actually means inches in one case but in another u could be referring to cm. It sucks unless someone bothers to mark units (i.e. "/in. or cm).
No, no, no! Luciano is wrong~~~ ;D Anyway, I never use dots, like in 453.234 I just say 453234..

BTW, ABNT means something like: "Technical Norms" Brazilian Association

I hate ABNT :)
BTW, wasn't because some engineers screwed up big time that NASA lost a space probe? Something to do with the instructions being in imperial and they using the metric system on landing? Can't believe you yanks don't yield to the metric system. It's so much simpler.
