Actually (I don't know how) I've had people here at work mistake my iPAQ for a Gameboy. Later they'd tell me that they were wondering what I'd been "playing." It's always a bit of a surprise to tell them that I was actually reading a book or working on my script.<br><br>...or playing Quake. But I try not to tell people that while I'm at work.

OK, Here's a list of the different PPCs if they were cars:<br>iPaq - Ford Taurus<br>Casio - Lexus GS300<br>Jornada - BMW M3<br><br>As you can clearly see, the modest Casio looks the best. <br>What's with all those bubbles and ugly curves on the iPaq? It looks like a space jelly-bean!<br>Jornada, now that's classic. It's sleek, sexy, and simple.<br><br>But the perfect PPC design is far from here. The iPaq looks ugly with it's cheap, shiny, plastic silver and weird bubbly curves.<br>I don't think the Casio will bring about the end of all other designs, but atleast it doesn't look like some cheap gameboy. And just wait until that silver plastic starts to smudge and get all green -ish.

Hey, I used to own a Taurus. The station wagon version, extended no less. Kickass car. Pretty good gas mileage, and since there's a million of them out there repairing it was cheap. Unfortunately, I got it second-hand, so I was repairing it far too often...<br><br>Guess that is a little like an iPAQ.<br><br>But I still have to admit I like Compaq's offering the best of the PDAs I've owned so far for one reason: the size. The iPAQ is really small, really thin, and really fast for its size. Even with the naked 3100 and its small 16megs of RAM, I can just throw it in my pocket and it's not a whole lot bigger than old Palm IIIxe. It's smaller than my Dad's IIIc device. And with monochrome I never have battery trouble (just trouble recompiling everything, which is making for a neat hobby. If I keep this up, maybe I'll take up Linux.)<br><br>So that's my impression. If you're gonna buy one, the bizarre Star Warez looking style of the iPAQ may not be your cup of tea (it's growing on me), but the size and weight make it a pretty killer device no matter what, in my opinion. I'm sure I could carry a larger device around (and have, I used to carry my Dell laptop around school, plus a portable printer for it) but being able to just throw it into the pocket of a pair of slacks makes for a nice incentive.<br><br>One more thing: it won't really affect the look of the device, but the ARM processor will be a standard for the next-generation OS. It's nice to have that assurance of compatibility for the future.<br><br>Gotta admit though... sometimes I find myself staring at the Casio listings on eBay uncontrollably...

I am disgusted!<br><br>This is why people buy Mac's...not PPCs.  I mean once you start talking about buying a piece of technology for the way it matches your hair, you need to be beaten with a stick!<br><br>Who started this thread?  Is it an artist?  It has to be...<br><br>I have a thought...if you are so concerned with look why don't you donate all of your technology to people who can use it and go buy an iMac and a Palm.  They are pretty....ohhhhh....look at the pretty colors....<br><br><br>BAH!

Whoah, hey, hey, hey. Don't compare my handheld to a Mac. It actually works, for one thing. <br><br>I'm not arguing that we should ignore the internals, but certainly the appearance of something as ubiquitous and as flashy as a PPC can come in handy. And cool-looking cases for PCs are nothing new, either. I drool all over a case by Voodoo computers called the Window that has a huge pane of glass on the side so you can look inside without opening it. Alienware's new looks are very sweet, especially the silver and black models. Would I buy a computer based solely on appearance? No. Both Alienware and Voodoo are _extremely_ solid machines that I would buy if they came wrapped in cardboard and hamster hide. Would I buy a machine based solely on its internals without considering its appearance? Hell no. I wouldn't buy an iMac or one of the toilet-seat iBooks if it had SGI internals and an OS lovingly crafted by caring Tibetan monks (which, despite what people will tell you, it didn't. No Mac does.).<br><br>A PocketPC is a nice, powerful, superior piece of equipment, no doubt. But it's a lot like a really nice, expensive calculator: you can't really upgrade it, it's not meant for rendering the next Final Fantasy, and it does pretty much the same thing as all the other Pock--calculators out there. Once you reach that point, isn't appearance even somewhat relevant?<br><br>Besides, it's a friggin' flame-bait thread anyway. <grin>

Lo siento. I'm feeling pretty mellow today, so you'll have to be pretty offensive to get me going.<br><br>On a similar note, though, I do think the EM-500 is a very nice looking machine. Too bad about the MMC slot instead of CompactFlash, but it's still pretty tempting there. If only I had money...

It saddens me that technology has taken a backseat to esthetics and grudges.<br><br>-- People buy mac because they think it is pretty and they HATE microsoft.  But moreover they believe the media hype that it is actually a better solution.  Falicy: Mac is better than MS for graphic design.  Truth: Windows supports the BEST software in 2D (Photoshop, which runs more reliably and faster on a PC), 3D (SoftImage, which runs better on a PC now than on a Silicon Graphics box), and animation software (Premier or Flash depending on what you want.<br><br>--Dorks think Linux/Unix is superior because they hate MS.  In truth, Windows is better....EVEN FOR DEVELOPERS.  They say it isn't an 'open' platform, which is crap because it is...you just need to be able to read to use it.<br><br>Microsoft Rules!  HAHAHAH!<br><br>...hmmph...where did that come from?

I think it's absurd too, but some people put form above content. If so, why is there color cases for most of the PDA? And usually selled in packs of THREE? Some morons think (as everything can be) a statement of fashion, power, bank account and "tool" size. I pitty for them.
