yay, microdrives, large disks that eat tons of power, and are relatively fragile. Just what the doctor ordered. Now this http://www.digitalfilm.com/company/press_01_23_02a.html might be worth while to have a type II slot.

"a suggested list price $1,199."

Uhh... that is a bit too expensive for me and I am sure for just about everyone. I could buy five 512 meg cards for about that and would get 2.5 gigs. Not exactly for the average joe-consumer.

When you say fragile, what do you mean. Are they apt to break when not stored properly, or do they have a problem with heat or something? They are a lot cheaper than that for one. Also, if I had a 1 gig microdrive could a put a movie (like the matrix) in divx format on it, and watch the whole thing?

hell yeah, a couple of films in 1 gig, especially if you make them specially for the pocket pc.

ROB -
think of them as tiny hard drives, if you bump any hard drive too much they begin to break rather quickly. So for mobile computing they really aren't the best sort of device if you're worried about data loss.

They also heat up very quickly, and consume more power. Although, after that last fiasco with the Mr. Flash CF cards I would like to see some comparrisons between a MD and CF in terms of power consumption.

BTW all, that 1 gig CF card is supposed to be for ppl who do digital photography because it has a super fast write speed. There are 1g cards coming out that are MUCH cheaper. You can get 512mb CF for much cheaper than the MD too tho...

Wow, time to do some research. BTW, how big is the average 2 hr movie once converted for the ppc?

depends on compression. can be between 20mb - 500+

depends on what quality you want

There are some reasons micros really suck. First off my cad teacher has 1 in his 3 megapixel camera and has bumped it to hard and had to send it back on warrant 3 times already. Second watching a whole movie on a micro is impossible unless you have a battery extender becuase its hard enough to watch the whole thing useing flash before the battery dies at least for me and if microdrives consume all that power than i imagine there is no way in hell you can watch 2 hrs of divx on the standerd battery.

Do the Mr. Flash CF cards drain power faster than other CF Cards?

there have been a few battery life test between different cards, and the Mr.Flash doesnt hold up like the rest of them. So to answer your question, yes.

Yeah... Microdrives were really cool back in the day... but right now flash cards are extremely cheap ($195 (including shipping) for a 512 MB CF II card). Then again, the i-pod uses a toshiba-type 5 GB Hard-drive and uses a lot of cache to save battery life. Microdrives are actually one of the most durable hard-drives in existence. Oh well.

I want to get an E-200 so much! By the time I get one (earliest is like 2 months, latest 6 months), there should be a ton of USB drivers out for it. I mean, already you can hook up a wireless keyboard and mouse (at same time, but mouse w/o pointer is pretty pointless) and a USB floppy drive (this is very important to me). Also, I like the fact that I can use my CF cards in it and at the same time my friend's MMC cards. BTW, a lot of the E-200 accessories are unavailable, but they have a tiny little adapter for USB host and also to connect old e1xx/em50x accessories to (the little adapter fits on the bottom of the unit and doesn't make the e200 any wider or thicker). The adapter costs a very reasonable $30. A USB host port thingy is built into the cradle (which is, of course included), so USB functionality is still available without any adapters. Another thing, the E-200 has a removable battery and also an extra battery in the PCMCIA sleeve. That will come in handy when I use the upcoming 20 GB Toshiba PCMCIA Hard-drives ;). I found the E-200 for only $520, too. That price will hopefully come down. Wait a minute... Hmmm... On second thought... E-200s suck! Don't get one! It will cause your computer to blow up and send glass shards into your neck and kill you! (have you seen "Final Destination"?)
Die, Palm, Die. If that offended you, then get rid of your Palm OS device.

Any idea about the power consumption on this one?
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/memorypro/51comcomflas.html

And are you looking at losing merely minutes (like 5-10) or 30-40 if you go with a non brand-name card?

I would get a "brand name" CF card, but they are over twice the price (at least SanDisk cards are.)

You can get decent prices on SanDisk CF cards if you shop around. I bought a 128 meg at Costco for $59.
