ditching the pc: map making

ditching the pc: map making

are there any open source map editors...? if so, how difficult would it be to port it to ppc? would screen limitations make it too dificult and not worth the effort? and finally when compiling a .bsp, any estimates on how long it would take?

i think it would work ok. the 4 different views (2d-x, 2d-y, 2d-z, 3d preview) could be accessed with the calendar, outlook, etc. buttons. the stylus could be used to generally locate and size things and the directional could more accurately locate/size things. the editor could use the full screen (no startmenu, etc.) and a toolbar could pop-up when either AUX5 or JOY1 is pressed.

there still is of course compiling the maps and i dont think there would be any choice except to wait, or as has been suggested in other threads: compile on a pc.

i know this (map editor on a ppc) seems unworkable, however if a ppc is the only computer a person has (like me)...

You don't need a 3d view. You can do alot with just 2 views: a front view, and a top view. Then you have a rotation thing to rotate so you can see all sides. This is how Quark, my favorite map editor, works, though it has a 3d view too. The old versions were exactally like what I just described though, and they were fine map editors. The thing is I don't think the quark source is released...
