It's a GZIP file, check out
Check out for more information on the GZIP format. WinRar should definitely be able to handle the file, though.

Prob a bad or corrupt download. Would suggest re-download. Use WinZip or WinRAR. It's compressed twice. Only un-zip once.

But you dont even have to uzip. You can install the zipped PAK into the quake/ID1/ dir and it will work, slow load but work none the less. If it doesnt even do that, prob a bad download. My guess...

Well you have to unZIP it first, but you probably won't want to unGZIP it. PocketQuake can read the pak0.pak.gzip file, but not the pak0.pak.gzip.zip file.
