I just switched to 2000 about a week ago. It has the most interesting hang up of any of the Windows releases I've seen yet.

Now, when things start getting out of control - like if I've got 10 browser windows open, and I start closing them, while playing mp3's and having both e-mail clients open - instead of just freezing up like it used to, now the task bar gets the size-adjustment arrows when ever I cursor over it, and I can't click down there. I can manually stop the browser tasks that are fouled up, but I can't regain control of the taskbar. Interesting eh? I can, for all intents and purposes, continue to use the computer; so long as I don't have to use anything in the system tray (i can access start menu crap through explorer). But by that point, it's like, "just reboot, jackass."

Let me add, real quickly, that my Linux machine - which I'm using as we speak - has been running "8:28am up 14 days, 8:57, 1 user, load average" :)

Just had to throw it in there.

Depends on your hardware. I'm running a 366 celeron laptop, so I would be a moron to upgrade to XP--I just don't have the horsepower for it. Plus 2K is plenty stable (ran it literally all summer without a reboot) and contains all the compatibility of XP when you drop SP2 on it. Very cool stuff. The only thing I think I'll miss are a few of the little GUI adjustments, like multiple app windows condensed to one submenu on the taskbar.

Networking in Win2K is worth the price of admission by itself. Never reboot, never had any problems with it. NICE.

I have an Intel P3 730mHz with 128MB of RAM. I think it should be able to handle XP. Or not?

Yeah easy.. I don't know what the exact specs are but i'd assume that anything ouver 600 HZ could handle it and you could watch movies and whatnot! Go for it.. I you want to try contact me i'mm put the Iso Up on my server and give you the IP.

Get more RAM. It's cheap. Other than that, it should run great: my laptop's a 366Celeron from Dell.

When I bought mine two years ago, the fastest thing Dell offered was a 500MHz, so I figured I was doing all right. A month later, they started offering the 750MHz machines. I was pretty upset, but in the end there's really nothing you can do about it.
