A scary image

Hi there,

I'm always scared when I see this image, I don't know why. I think it's a fear of something I cannot see. Please post your thoughts here. Thanks.

Ahh, the scream by Edward Munch. A great image and an inspiring one when it comes to my work.

but why is the person Screaming?

I guess this is an example of looking at what is NOT drawn. Must be a Medafore for something in munch's life.

There's one thing about this image that is very interesting in my opinion:

Since Edvard (yeah, with "v") Munch is from Norway, "The Scream" is only one possible translation.

Many people translate the original title with "The Cry", which gives a completely different meaning, I think.

For me, "scream" is something offensive, while "cry" is quite passive and expresses fear and isolation.

As far as I know (I'm no art expert), Munch concentrates on this kind of subject (death, misery, bleakness - the darker aspects of life in general) in most of his work, because he lost his whole family when he was still a child.

Well, if you look at the picture, you see a couple walking away from the person, who has features somewhat suggesting a child.

yes, crying and Screaming are very different emotions. the only thing in common is that they are expresions linked with pain.

Its not like a scream of fear, its a scream like a child who has been sepperated from their parents. the bridge signifies a trasition, like living with foster parents. the side the couple is leaving on has a lake with boats, or happiness.. the pit below is emptiness...

There is a poem explaining this picture:
I was out walking with two friends -
the sun began to set -
suddenly the sky turned blood-red -
I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on a fence -

Well, duh. It sounds better for sure, but this is how Munch explained it.

What's that story about this guy without legs that walked around a city, I think Brandenburg, in Germany before the sun set and he got there just in time because the city was on a hill and he thought he lost but won because they could still see the sun.

I liked that story. Can you tell it, Eike. please please please! *whines like 3 year old*

Agh agh agh!! That's the coolest story ever! It's like that german state's story! It's in the north west of german by the rhine river. It's a great story.
