I've found that Snails only works on my iPaq 3835 if I have >30 megs of program memory, and it sometimes doesn't work then. The only time I've gotten it to work all the time is when I have around 35 megs or more of program memory.

soft reset.

The mem refers to the main mem on the device, not on a storage card.

3835 problems

Postby jediad » Apr 15, 2002 @ 5:45am

Okay, I spent two hours trying Snails with a hard reset and installing only Snails to Main mem. Still the AI freezes and locks up. So, I'm convince it's something with how 3835 works with this game or the game itself has a problem. Since all my other games and software works, I say it's the Snails game. I tried different things with game installed in Main/Storage. I increased memory on Main Ram over 40Meg still crashing... Please make a update with a 3800 series fix...

Thanks JediAD

Yes, we came to the same conclusion- that it is Snails that has a problem.

It doesn't do any good to blame it on the hardware, because hardware can't be modified. Snails however, CAN be modified. Peter is attempting to get his hands on a 38xx in order to fix this once and for all.

Until then, we know it runs on the 38xx. Odd that even a hard-reset didn't fix it. A question: when it freezes, does it drop you back to the OS after about 20-30 seconds (maybe more if you have to wait for the "turn to be over)? The game is equipped to prevent complete lockups and bails out.

Well at least that is working. I'm not a coder, so I'll pretend that I am doing some really technical analysis here.

1.) Soft-reset your device.

2.) Make note of how much free RAM you have on your device (Storage RAM doesn't do us any good)

3.) Run Snails. When it crashes back to the OS, make note of the free RAM you have now.

4.) Do this 3 times, soft-resetting each time, and see if the results are consistent.

Repeat those four steps infinately, until we come up with an update. Okay, that last sentence was a joke, just to see if you were paying attention.

It is possible, and this is my theory, but has been proven to be true in many cases, that when the program first starts, some memory, aside from the 8 megs, is allocated by windows and/or maybe the programmer. It could be as little as .6 megs, but this may be enough to through it over the top. Also, I have had problems with inacurate malloc returns more than once.
