Ah yes, nothing inspires a budding programmer like money. Loads-o-cash. That isn't inspiration, I am sorry.
True Inspiration is drawn from the admiration of the works by people like Simon Jacobs, Jacco Bikker, Peter Balogh, Dan East and Sven Myhre. (if you don't know who these people are then some research is in order). Furthermore, it is the respect for their accomplishments within the industry as a whole- far and beyond their own projects.
Every single one of the above mentioned people have multiple PPC projects under their belt. I maintain constant contact with all but Jacco (never got around to talking this busy guy), and all of them have one thing in common: dedication.
So my final answer to your question is:
No, there isn't money to be made if you ask "how much?"
and
YES there is money to be made if you ask "what can I do to push the industry to its extents?"
