Do you mean they have to recode everything? or is this a hardware problem that needs to be repaired? Should I return it while I'm still within my 14-day trial period and wait for a better X-Scale Device?

The problem with that is the e740 is the best there is in every other aspect! (size, removeable battery, weight, the d-pad is great! Jog dial, both CF and SD, integrated WiFi 802.11b, the list goes on...)

It's a software problem that has to do with the hardware. It should be fixed eventually if you want to hold onto the device, I mean it's still very fast in everything else. I doubt it will be fixed by next week or anything like that, though.

You might be advised to return your Toshiba. I believe that this problem will not be solved just by a software update. I think it's inherent to the hardware in the e740.

I once tried a Packard Bell PocketGear P300 (stay well away) and it exhibited exactly the same problems as the currect XScales, even though it had an ARM 206 MHz processor.

If you do return it, you could always hand on to your money and buy a later model if they happen to fix this with a software update.
Crosswind technique: "Using your peripheral vision, react to body movements, gasps, groans, and shouts from the other side of the cockpit, and always remember that it's better to be lucky than good."

I just heard that Intel is going to optimize pocketdivx for xscale, so they are pretty sure it's just a matter optimizing the code

What kind of optimimisation requirements are we talking about here? It better not require ASM just to get Snails to run at a decent pace, since we didn't need it for any other device.

I would seriously return the device. I have been waiting to upgrade to the new Xscale (thats why I still have a Casio e-125), and refuse to buy the crap they are pushing now. If I wanted inferior hardware, I'd buy a friggin Palm.

I find it ridiculous and unacceptable that those devices are shipped without fulll support of software that is already available. Stupid move.
