SCORE!!!!

SCORE!!!!

Postby Village_Ideot » Oct 27, 2001 @ 1:40pm

Hey guess what...so our neighboors went on vacation and had me mow their lawn.

She just paid me and gave me $25, but thats not the point. She said that her husband (who is a news anchor) was presenting windows XP for something or another, but anyway Microsoft gave them Windows XP for free. Now these people are the most computer illiterate people in the world, but they said once they installed windows XP, they would give me the disk for free!!!

One question though...Would it be worth it to install windows XP on my computer instead of WinME?

Is there a way we could obliterate his connection? Forever?

The problem is they'll install it on their machine with their product key. Then they'll have to activate it within 30 days. Then you'll install it on your machine and when it comes your turn to activate it, your stuck. God Bless WPA. You're scenario is exactly what Microsoft was trying to stop

You're better off getting the devils0wn release, it comes with the corporate files and a corporate key, no activation required. Or you can just make your own cd from the xp cd you have, just dump the corporate files into it and use a corporate cd key.

... And yes, Windows XP is the best OS i've used yet, other then OSX, and much better then windows ME, if you do install make sure you do a clean install. My cousin did an upgrade from ME to 2000 and lost 20 gigs of work with an unrecoverable BSOD.

Ok, Windows 2000 far surpases Windows XP. Stability, speed... unless you are highly amused by new icons, there is no reason to get Windows XP.

here are alternate OS's:

gaming: Windows 98 SE
productivity: Windows 2000

or if you want to try something different:

Mandrake Linux 8.1 (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/)

I disagree Chris. Running Windows 2000 on my notebook I could boot up in about 1 minute and 30 seconds. In windows XP Pro, i can boot up in about 35-40 seconds. That's a significant jump. This is with a clean install on both.

There shouldn't be such a big difference between the two (2k and xp), except that 2k is older. You can turn off the new features in XP to make it faster.
Xp has BSODed on me twice though, and I didn't see a single BSOD in my time using 2k. But two BSODs isn't too much.
So if you install one of them now I don't see why you shouldn't choose the newer one,XP , if of course you have the hardware for it.

i could post, but i'm too bitter right now. :) all i would say is i'm not sure why were wasting valuable forum breath talking about XP instead of p/pc? I'm an MCSE and i don't want to talk about my job on the weekend because someone is either stupid or just doesn't understand MS busness/product relationships, let alone the technical underpinnings. I want quake in my fraggin' pocket.

:)
I have been running xp and i love it. First of all it is way faster than 2k at everything. Microsoft does an xp vs me vs 98 vs 2k benchmarks on there site and xp is like at least 15% faster than all other ms-os. As far as stability i havent crashed my windows once in the two weeks ive had it.

again, i get better punch out of my optimized Win2K than most people with a stock 98SE, and certainly ME. As with all MS products, XP will be the same. But I never trust software I can't/haven't been able to tweaked. refer to Chris Edwards post RE: Linux-Mandrake 8.1 (or stable 8.2 cooker snapshots if your gutsy) ;) It's always nice to have new stuff, but does anyone ever ask "Why am I using this and how best can I use it to that end?" I'm not your stereotypical MCSE either, I just want the most bang for my buck -- and right now, XP ain't it.

P.S I won't touch ME again with a ten foot pole, and I don't care about silent releases. *Yuck!*

P.P.S. CE is another MS OS, I know, but that's why I'm starting a review of various Palm/Pocket PC OSs and how deep they can be config'd -- more important, why!. Next stop, Debian. My developer friends will love me for that. :)
