To set things straight:

For most of the 256k LCD screens there IS a DLL upgrade. This techically increases the colour depth of the screen. It works through one of the following principles:

1) The screen was already capable of displaying 64k colours, and Windows CE was unable to take advantage of it.

2) The screen is technically 256 colours, but something called a Vibrant Display Driver increases the colour depth by vibrating (geddit?) the LCD pixels to increase the colour depth. Don't argue with me, that's just how it works. Peter Balogh knows more about it than I do, that's what he told me.

The Jornada 680 was originally 256 colours, mine is upgraded through the driver. It does make a difference. I also suspect the 720 display has been upgraded with this driver at the factory, since the screens are identical at high colour depths, AFAIK.

Unfortunately, for 525 users, there is no upgrade. Whether this is due to HP not developing a driver, or the screen itself, I don't know. You may want to check HP's driver download page to see if anything new is there.

I know you can purchase a CASIO LCD seperately, for around $100, but I don't know if it would even be compatable on a hardware level, the plug is probably even a different type and size, let alone the way the backlight functions.
I've taken apart my Casio E-125, detached all the layers of PCB and even removed the screen. I don't know anything about the inside of the Jornada. It might work, but the E-125 screen is too large.

You can always buy the screen repair from hp for $100. It'll give you a 54x's screen along with 16-bit color.

Or, for $100, you could buy a second hand 54x. :)

SimCity 2000 will run on the 525, but if you look at it carefully, the colours are messed up. And it's slow. Very, very, slow.

I was just making a City for SimCity 2000 on my PC and yes it runs on 256 colors to look best. If you want awesome color, but not as expensive machine, go to www.compaqfactoryoutlet.com This is where I got my iPAQ with MP3 player for $320 (or around that) It has a 4,624 (:P again, somthing like that) color screen, but I can assure you, after playing Metallion on it, there is no difference whatsoever. With SimCity 2000 for PPC on it, it runs nicely, even underclocked to 177Mhz. The thing worked fine for me. Check it out.
