Without wanting to start an editor war, my favourite editor ever is:

<a href="http://www.ultraedit.com">UltraEdit</a>

(it can automatically convert Unix->DOS and back if you want it to).

so how come I am getting a rectangle character rather than seeing the text on another line though??

EditPad Lite or Pro is a great editor

but the Notepad in WindowsXP gets rid of those rectangular characters, it reads them correctly just like Wordpad.
