no ai isnt needed, just physically sophisticated robots. they dont need to be able to think for themselves, just be very articulated - enough to build stuff for us anyway.

If you had AI, you could send the robots in advance, without the need of human controler. Imagine that, you could have a robot team build a base and then human colonizers would arrive.

but would that require AI? i mean really they just need to follow instructions to build the base dont they?

i suppose if we didnt know what to expect AI might be useful... but then why send a load of good technology to a place that hasnt been surveyed yet?

I don't think paul quite grasps the concept of AI. It doesn't necessitate critical or even complex "thinking". We aren't talking about Data out there building these things.

But certainly some kind of AI would be necessary to complete the task of building complex structures. Even something as simple as stacking blocks requires serious AI, and that is in a controlled environment with humans nearby to tweak it.

how does movement need intelligence?

dont they just have instructions like 'rotate 60 degrees, open claw, move over block, close claw, raise arm'?

explain

Paul, what if the wind blows off a block of the pile? Without AI, no robot will fetch it, since it was only programmed to pile blocks.

yeah, that is what I meant paul. The robot needs to be able to make decisions based on environment and unplanned events. It also needs the ability to make crucial judgement and modify its own procedure.

Imagine if a beam gets bent, and the robot doesn't bother analyzing it, but just keeps building. It also needs to acknowledge that it has completed a task and move on to the next one.

I don't think Luci was condesending at all.
