Cell Phones!!!

Cell Phones!!!

Postby James S » Aug 28, 2002 @ 4:56am

I was roaming around all day today looking at cell phones and cell phone plans. Lot of extremely useless stuff, horribly designed phones, terrible services, and extremely confusing plans... but while I was in AT&T I saw this really nice phone they were featuring for mLife.

I have Alltel as my provider right now and the reason for the whole expedition was to get my voice mail and caller id fixed. I gave them my v60c so they could upgrade the software and put in the new area code. They came out with a brand new v60i and told me to take it instead because they couldn't upgrade mine! Sweet! But I still want a bluetooth phone and one that's fun and other stuff.

But this phone I saw at AT&T was just so cool. The Ericsson T86i. It's even smaller than the v60 (about the size of a credit card), has no obnoxious antennae to break off. A full color screen (that you can turn off just the screen to save battery). An always on mobile internet, and that coupled with bluetooth would be great for my PocketPC or laptop! The plans weren't too expensive either, and coverage in the areas where I'll need it for college. So that's what I think I'll save up for. This phone is just so cool. I stood in AT&T just playing with it for 15 minutes! They had the mobile internet and voice mail and sms all up and running on the demo phone in the store so I was messaging people and getting all the headlines. If I had bluetooth SDIO for my PPC I could have just walked in and connected to it, unbeknownenst to them... but back to the point. This phone is really great. Apparently it's brand new, too. Sprint didn't have anything like it, and AT&T's best phone was some junker integrated Palm thing, or my v60

Has anyone heard of this phone? Any down sides? It seems like the best cell phone I've ever used! I think this is what I'll save up for, forget computers and laptops and cars and radar detectors and PocketPCs, I want a new cell phone! (well I just got a new one for free, but you know what I mean :P)

What kind of cell phones is everyone else looking at? Just want to make sure I'm not just hyped up about something mediocre since I haven't even looked at cellphones in 3 years until today... seems like the last time I've done EVERYTHING is 3 years ago :/. My last webpage was 3 years ago. The last time I enjoyed a movie in the theater was 3 years ago. The last time I went to the beach was 3 years ago. ... 3 years ago was when I started highschool! I knew it, Lehigh Senior Highschool destroys all that is good.

 So what kind of cell phones is everyone looking at?

[EDIT] Just checked the price. It says it's more than $600! The T86 (no "i") was only $200 in the store. I hope they aren't stopping production of the cheaper model. It has all the same hardware and software, and it's a nicer grey-ish color, not that "baby's chew toy blue" that this one has going.

My friends has a T68, its a really cool phone, and is really small, only slightly very bigger than a Nokia 8310 (don't no if u have it in the US).

One thing i really like about it is joystick thing under the screen that u use for navigating, its like one of those eraser nib (can't think of their proper name) things u get on a laptop instead of a mouse. I haven't tried it on games, but i imagine it would be really good for those and u can dwnld extra games 4 it (although i doubt they would rival pocket quake  )

Yes, very nice phone, great colour screen. And lots of cool features. I was thinking about buying it, but then I saw the price-tag on the thing :(

I currently have a crappy old cellphone from work, all it can really do is call and be called, but hey that's exactly what I need it for ;)

Get a SmartPhone.
Crosswind technique: "Using your peripheral vision, react to body movements, gasps, groans, and shouts from the other side of the cockpit, and always remember that it's better to be lucky than good."

Moosemaster, the $600 price was probably for the handset only, when u buy it with a plan, they normally subsidise part of the price of the handset. The T68 is not being made anymore, as the only difference between the two is a software update, so they would have no reason to keep on producing the none 'i' phone.

I saw the T86 (no "i") at Circuit City for $149.
