Happy Mole Day!

Postby James S » Oct 21, 2002 @ 1:49am

A mole is the amount of matter that has the same amount of atoms as 12 grams of Carbon, or 6.02x10^23. It's different for everything.

1 mole = 6.02x10^23 atoms.

It can be any kind of atom, it can be any object as a matter of fact. If you've got a mole of notebook paper then you've got 6.02x10^23 pieces of paper.

In simplest terms, there are avogadro's number, or a mole, of protons in a gram. So if you somehow had nothing but protons, you would need 6.022x10^23 of them to get a gram. A mole is like a dozen, in that it refers to a specific number, and nothing else. You therefore cannot say a mole equals a certain amount of grams.

Gee, I really am a nerd.

*clears throat* It's supercritical...

The green smiley is to show that I'm showing off that I know about the supercritical mass of U-235. 8)

You only need 23 grams for critical mass to make a nuclear bomb. So that's some big bomb Warren's got packin'.

or is it 23 kilograms? I thought it was grams, oh well.

AFAIK it's very hard to find pure U-235; the 23 grams (or whatever) is only for pure U-235.
