Rocket trails were still done by vertex lights still though.

Vertex lighting? In rocket trails in Quake 2? I don't THINK SO! Time for you to scoot, sponge. :P

Let me clarify my definitions then.

By the way, if you fired a rocket in Quake1, the hallway would light up.. that seems to make it a lightmap to you, when it is clearly not. GLQuake has a command to modify this behavior; gl_flashbend 0 or 1

Vertex lighting is a light with a defined radius from a certain point. Looks like Quake2 to me, circular lights from the rockets. It would be a dynamic light, but it WON'T be a lightmap. I'm willing to look into the source and look for just that, a defined point at which the light lights from.

Lightmaps are exactly that, defining levels of light that aren't neccecarily restricted to radius.

I've talked with 2 other people whom have played Quake for years, and both agree with me, so I don't think I'm mistaken here.

I know for a fact Quake3's world lighting is a lightmap.

I just read into some tech docs on Quake II, the world does indeed use lightmaps (hell, that's what the rad tool compile-time is for) but the dynamic rocket lighting is still vertex.
