I am a geek. You're posting to a forum on PDAs. Actually, the image is from the game Xenogears by Square for the original playstation. It was the best RPG on the system.

Chuck:

Appleseed Cast is the only good band you mentioned, and that's just because of Low Level Owl I and II. Those weren't emo. They had tinges of emo, but they were largely indie experimental pop sort of stuff. Mates of State SUCK. Pretty Girls Make Graves is a better girl-singer band than them.

Emo was originally a pretty aggressive genre, and didn't resemble the current pop-emo at all. If you've ever heard Waterdown, they're closer to the original emo than Appleseed Cast.

In my experience, indie emo is far more superficial than indie rap. If you've ever heard El-P, Aesop Rock, or Non-Prophets, their lyrics are far more poetic than most of the indie emo bands I've heard.

I also find fairly little merit in any hardcore or metalcore groups.

If you want a good "emo" band, and it isn't traditional emo at all, check out The Wrens. They're amazing.

My point still stands: today's emo has absolutely nothing to do with punk, as is the misconception.

I think Evan Anthem is a good emo band (if you count them as emo.) Also check out Ben Kweller.

Sandmann, can you suggest some more indie artists? I was raised on hip hop, but now that I've gotten older most of it seems pretty shallow.

Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.

Okay, funny how you say I'm an idiot when we pretty much agree. I never said that Waterdown was the archetypal emo group nor did I say that they were good. I simply said that they're closer to original emo than Dashboard (who pretty much sucks).

Notice how we both said that emo came from aggressive roots? How we both said that the currently labeled 'emo' bands have little to do with original emo? We essentially agree.

I tried to avoid the ubiquitous Rites of Spring namedropping.

Basically, even if we DIDN'T agree, we could argue about it all day, cuz emo is essentially a misnomer wherever it's applied. All music is emotional, and emo as a label has evolved five million times.

Trae, did you find out about Evan Anthem through my suggestion? They are DEFINITELY emo, as emo has evolved and is generally accepted as describing that kind of music now. They are basically the only emo band I like (though I like some stuff of of Brand New's Deja Entendu).

Brig: are you looking for indie hip-hop or just indie music in general? I'll start with hip-hop. Here are the best:

Non-Prophets
http://www.lexrecords.com/docs/catalogue/018.html

El-P, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif
http://www.definitivejux.net -- go to Audio

Atmosphere
http://www.epitaph.com/goodies/index.php -- select artist: Atmosphere, click mini-site, click MP3s.

If you want instrumental hip-hop, check out Prefuse 73 and RJD2. RJD2 is on defjux.net, and Prefuse 73 is here:

I've got plenty more up my sleeves if you're into other genres. It'll be easier to talk with you if you want to on AIM.

Yeah I got Evan Anthem from your suggestions. I have found alot of bands I would never have found from Amazon recomending some. It looks at what type of music is on your wishlist and picks some.

Thanks Sandmann. My AOL name is Brigandine1. I'm not signed in right now.

I listen to most music. I have very eclectic tastes. I grew up on hiphop. It was fun back in the day. Now it's about benzes and bullshit. I like stuff I can relate to. I like rich lyrics, and an interesting sound. Either will do, I just don't like seeing the same old Bad Boy style bullshit "hip-pop".

Rock-wise, I found A Perfect Circle the other day. Their lyrics are great. Definetly like their Magdalena and Judith.

I'll take any music you think is worth listening to. I like new and interesting things.
