Asus A716 Giveaway

Postby jpxdude » Feb 19, 2004 @ 10:56am

This would be the next pocket pc I have after my Casio EM500 which has served faithfully through the years...they way I'd take advantage of it would be...

Upon planning to get a 1gig CF card, and 256mb SD, I will store most of my media on the CF, which include Video, Emulator roms, Music and games,...I'd use the SD card for my work related things, such as word, and excel documents which I'll work through on my 1 1/2 hour long journeys on the train to work (when I'm not gaming) :P

Since I tend to travel a lot, the WIFI function is a boon, I'd take advantage of the various WIFI hotspots whereever I am, and intergrate/syncronise it with the WIFI network connection I have at home, I've been hearing a lot about pocketlan software and would be keen in its applications with the device.

I like the positive note about sound quality being good on the A716 since I've always been a minidisc junkie, I think popping my sony nudes into this thing would be all the more sweeter for my music :)

I'd use the bluetooth function to transfer images between my Erricson T610...who needs a digicam when you have a camphone, having this will alleviate the space on my phone and also the PPC would be a more preffered place to keep my handy snaps for transference to anywhere else, (e,g computer, friends, family).

The battery life is the big winner for me, I'll probably keep my docking station at work to synchronise all my work and documents, since I work in the I.S Support sector, I'll be able to sort things out on the fly. I plan to get a wifi dongle to the computer system, so as im travelling around the office and I keep tabs on the system while supporting my colleges around the office, and have no worries of the device dying out on me!

The device has untold potential for use for my use. :)

the perfect PDA for me :)

Postby Cruiser » Feb 19, 2004 @ 12:16pm

My use for the a716 would actually be to get more family time with my wife and kids....along with the other more "businesslike" aspects it can help me with.

I was heavy into the ipaq scene when they 1st came out, and stayed that way for over a year. Work got busy, my kids started growing up, and the pocketPC and PDA scene slowly fell by the wayside. I sold my ipaq and have missed having a PDA ever since.

My wife and I used to play monopoly, solitire, some GB emulation, and watch a few movies and TV shows on my ipaq. My oldest daughter loved to play PocketPop and MineSweeper on it, and my youngest loved to scribble on the screen just to have fun.

The a716 would have MUCH more functionality than my original ipaq, and allow us to share the "family" PDA even more. My oldest daughter loves to get on the computer when watching NickJr, and the a716 would allow her to do that from our couch using the wifi network we have at home. She also enjoys a lot of music now, and could use the a716 to stream it from our server, or pop in an SD or CF card with her favorite compilation of songs. My wife and I could play games together again [ maybe even a little PocketPC Kama Sutra ;) ] , and my youngest daughter has grown up enough since then to start using it as more of an educational tool.

Of course, I would be able to utilize it heavily for work use as well. In my job (Switch Technician for a Cellular Phone Company), I have MANY spreadsheets to keep up with, and am on call 25% of the year. Normally, being on call requires me to carry my laptop EVERYWHERE I go for an entire week at a time. With the a716's built in Bluetooth and my Bluetooth Sony-Ericsson T608 Cell phone, I could connect to work on our 1X data network and VPN into the servers I need to access. VOILA, no more having to carry my laptop! My work also requires that I travel a lot for training. Being able to check email, surf the net, watch movies, use the wifi at the aiport and hotel, play games, etc. from the ASUS a716 would also mean I could leave my laptop at home for trips too. I can take pictures with my Canon S400, slip the CF card into the a716, connect to the internet via Bluetooth/T608 phone or wifi, and email pictures to my family at home so they can enjoy a bit of the scenery I'm seeing while I'm away. The superman strength battery life would insure I was able to use it whenever I needed it. Having a removable battery would also insure that the a716 would be usable even after a LONG day traveling or at the office.

Adding a GPS setup will come very soon after I get my next PDA, and the Bluetooth would work nicely paired up with a BT GPS receiver. That would allow me to keep my maps on a 4GB Hitachi CF microdrive, and still have the SD slot free! Maybe even getting an SD Camera would allow me to leave my S400 at home as well. I'm liking this idea even more and more as I type... :D

So basically, I have no PDA right now, and have recently been searching heavily for one to fit mine and my family's "needs". The ASUS a716 fits the shoe perfectly. Built in Bluetooth was a MUST have, and the built in 802.11b is a very nice bonus. Having at the least a built in CF slot was also must. Add in the SDIO slot, and the a716 is pretty much the perfect PDA to fill all my wants and needs....

Pocket PC's are the future

Postby bluetrevian » Feb 19, 2004 @ 5:14pm

I'd use my A716 for software design. People don't realize what a powerful little tool these Pocket PC's are and how cruddy the applications are that they use. With proper design, and some ridonkculous implementation these little devices will replace you're wallet, you're mp3 player, and quite possibly you're new-fangled portable Media Centers.

Like I said, all you need is the right software.

The Asus Pocket PCs have a good reputation for performing well - especially wth the likes of playing MOVIES. The original Star Wars trilogy is released on DVD in September! DVD to Pocket PC has been released. Enough said! ;)

Here is my entry.

I would use this device to play emulated games until I puked(or the battery ran out of juice). I have a maestro now and it is starting to show its age in the mobile gaming arena.

How would you best take advantage of all the features the a7

Postby Old&Gray » Feb 19, 2004 @ 7:12pm

Thanks for the great review.

This would be my first PDA (well -- a long time ago, those initials meant something else -- I'm not talking about that!)

This little gizmo will finally get me out of the paper&pen era, and I will be able to start catching up with those young whipper-snappers who keep whipping out their PDAs at meetings.

The date-book features will assist my aging memory so that I can keep up with my appointments w/o having to remember which scrap of paper I wrote what on.

The WiFi feature will fit right into my home network and allow me to sync & download as needed.

Then it will become another great little tool to help me become further dependent upon electronic gizmos of all kinds!

And then I can pretend that I am still a young whipper-snapper....

My new Asus

Postby krisklinger » Feb 19, 2004 @ 9:26pm

When i first win it, i will hug it and rub it. I will then load it up with MP3s, videos, and games. For the times when music, videos, or games won't do, i will use either the WiFi to connect to my home internet or the bluetooth to connect using my cell phone. I will search for and view a little porn. And then when i have found just the right picture, i will beam it via IR to my printer. I will then go to sleep and dream happy dreams of my new Asus and how it brought joy and purpose to my life. Thank you pocketmatrix.
