A Question for Mr. RANDALL http://www.devastation3

A Question for Mr. RANDALL http://www.devastation3

Postby Waiseguy » Dec 21, 2001 @ 1:59am

Hey Randall,
I visited your website http://www.devastation3.com/ and downloaded and tested out all of the custom maps that you have posted.
Everything went smooth, but the quality of textures in the game was in no comparison to the actual photos posted on your website. I mean all the colors were pale and there was virtually no shadow or lightning effects noticeable.
I am just curious if it is just me, or did you take the pictures of the levels off of your pc.
I would like to compare the ingame image quality of other players.
Thanks Everyone.

Every last one of those pics came directly off my Casio E-125, without any modification or touch-up.

You don't state exactly which device you are using. But if it can't match the quality of those screenshots, then your screen is inferior to the Casio.

My PC runs glQuake, which has an obvious OpenGL look to it.

well really the screen shouldnt make a difference because screenshots dont use the screen do they, its a software thing. maybe his brightness or contrast settings are wrong in the game itself.

His display may also only support 12 bit color.

Dan East

Or he could just have mipmapping heavily enabled in his config file, along with some brightness/gamma settings and other things like that.

Here is a couple pictures that will best illustrate the kind of graphics I am getting on my IPAQ. I should also mention that I have a 12bit screen, but I am still wondering if it is the screen that makes such a dramatic difference.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Here are some of the original screens by Randall

Image
Image

If Anyone has any suggestions as to how I will be able to improve my graphics, I will appreciate it.

I have no idea. I have a 16-bit screen.

It just looks a bit more dithered on the iPAQ, but I wouldn't say those screenshots look terrible. All I can suggest is to adjust your brightness/contrast on your device.

Looks like your version hasn't been RADed or VISed.

!?

Postby Weiseguy » Dec 21, 2001 @ 6:24pm

When you referred to "RADed or VISed" did you mean that the map was not compiled properly to reflect the brightness/darkness, or did you mean that some of my local quake settings were misconfigured.

By the way, can someone with IPAQ(12bit) tell me what is their optimal brightness/contrast settings for playing quake. Thanks everyone.

Off topic, but how the hell do you take screen shots of a map running on the ipaq? I need to do this for some map reviews im writing.

yeah, RAD and VIS have to do with the compiling of the map, which I obviously did.

You can tell that RAD and VIS were used, because there are still obvious hints of shadows in certain areas (under the window ledge). Without RAD/VIS, there would be no shadows at all and everything would be constatly fullbright.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't worry about the brightness. I created all those textures and they use the brighter end of the Quake Color Palette anyway, so they are intended to be brighter. (I wanted to get away for the dark bullshit of the orginal Quake)

Also, even thought those screenshots were taken directly from my Casio, that is not how dark my screen is. When the game takes a screenshot, it does it at the hardware level, with no regard to the software settings. So the screenshots are always much darker than what my screen actually shows.

its been a long time since I messed with te quake console, I don't remember if this is correct or not, but try:

bind aux1 "screenshot"

you can bind it to any button really. In the PC version of Quake you just press f12.

GAMMA PROBLEM

Postby Weiseguy » Dec 21, 2001 @ 8:59pm

I used pocket controller http://www.pocketpccity.com/software/po ... ketpc.html , and it was very good at reflecting exactly the way my screen looked at the time.
Now since it is not the problem with contrast, I would like to know if I can adjust the gamma. To tell you the truth I do not know how to do this on IPAQ, but I am wondering if I will change my gamma settings by altering the "default.cfg" for quake:

viewsize 100
gamma 1.0
volume 1.0
sensitivity 3

I tried playing with the gamma variable but with no effect. What is my problem? Thank you all for your input.
