Ay, you people and your constant degradation of root beer are destroying the cornerstone of my world, I hope you realize this. It's all I've got left! <sob>

Good God. Isn't that a depressing thought. I'd better go get a root beer to cheer myself up...

D@mn!

<grin>

Root Beer was orginally created during the prohibition era, to replace alcohol. It could be legally sold on the street, and it gave a reason for OWNING AND OPERATING a stillery.

Where I grew up in Ohio there were A&W drive-ins all over. They served their rootbeer from the tap in large, thick, chilled mugs. There's something about the taste of rootbeer and chilidogs that go together perfectly. Speaking of food, in Ohio if you ordered a hotdog, you got a hotdog with just ketchup and maybe mustard. Down here in Virginia if you order a hotdog it comes with Mustard, Onions, Chili and Cole Slaw. If you ask for a "Coney Dog' they'll usually say "What, you want a Corn Dog?", because they have never even heard of a "Coney Dog". Weird you can drive a few hundred miles across the same country and food is so different. My mom grew up in Ohio and had never heard of Biscuits and Gravy until my dad brought her down here to VA, where its prolific (and delicious). In VA most all hotdogs have a red dye added to make them look pink, where in Ohio you couldn't find such a beast.

Dan East

Dan, where do you live here in Virginia? I moved to Fairfax from Indiana (after moving there from Kentucky) and the only thing I've really noticed missing from the place is Sonic. Now THAT was a great hot dog. And you could get the Route 66 drink, 66 ounces of soda... Oh, yeah. And fill it with root beer, just to spite the foreigners.

Seriously, I always hear about those A&W places though, and I've always wanted to go to one. Maybe one day when I'm on a tournament trip with the Forensics team we'll find one to eat at.

We have sonics out here in AZ, but theyre more known for their burgers than hot dogs now. We used to have one A&W place at a shopping mall in the food court, their hot dogs were pretty tasty i might add.. but it went out of business.

But now, we're getting In&out burgers now, and they're the most overrated burgers in the country, i love 'em!

I live on the west side of VA, near Wytheville. There are Sonics all over the place around here. I've never had a fast food place make so many mistakes as the Sonic in Wytheville, but that is probably just a problem with that particular restaurant.
A&W is a lot like Sonic (of course since Sonic copied off of them). After you pull up and are ready to order, you turn on your headlights. A car-hop will come out to take your order. When your done eating or need anything else you turn your headlights back on. They used to have antique car shows on Wednesdays, and the place was packed out with classic cars. They had these little tiny glass mugs for the kids to drink their rootbeers out of. :)

Dan East

I just realised something. our adopted Romanian children don't like Root Beer either, which I thought was odd. Ever since I was a kid, I remember going to A&W and loving Root Beer. Especially their floats.

I guess it must be some kind of cultural thing. Shapeshifter, what do you guys think of Root Beer (sorry, I don't recall you responding to this yet).

Diet... thats funny!
I've learned that what we are meant to do is make love. All those other things; sleeping, eating, going to school, are just to pass time till we make love again.
