ditching the pc: map making

two views

i think two views would still be too crowded. but unlike 4 views, two views would possibly be workable.

Since I made 4 Quake maps for the PocketPC, I can't imagine trying to cram all that interface into a pocketPC screen. Even my desktop computer didn't have all the screen I needed.

Early versions of the map editors were largely ineffective. Basically they were Doom Map editors converted to Quake BSP. Doom wasn't truly 3D so the map editor only needed 2 views.

CF cards aside, the program memory is the thing that kills most devices. Storage never is a problem (for most people).

A map editor for Quake isn't an impossibility. But when does an application cease to be efficient? Especially if it doesn't have a compiler or a 3d view.

the interface

Postby colganc » Feb 7, 2002 @ 12:53am

the screen could fit everything. like i said earlier: one view at a time and a toolbar or even a screen with all the editing options that pops up when JOY1 is pressed. memory isnt a large problem either, because most ppc's come with 32 or 64 megs these days and originally quake maps were made with that much or less since it came out roughly 7 years ago. none of the problems are insurmountable...yes probably difficult...but again not impossible.

compiling

Postby colganc » Feb 7, 2002 @ 2:51am

perhaps compiling could be taken care of with a tray application that works in the background whenever the ppc is on using idle cycles.[/img]

First off i dont mean to question Dan but im 99% positive worldcrats 3d view is software unless told otherwise in the options ;). Second of all a map editor may kickass becuase of the screen size it may not though. Third if we just ripped the complinig part it would kick ass i mean why compile on the ppc just edit it then sync and compile.

OpenGL is open source, but it relies on the 3D hardware in the video card to do most of the work. Obviously Pocket PC devices have no 3D hardware, so the Pocket PC version of OpenGL does all the rendering with software. That's what you are paying for.

Some editors may well contain software renderers, especially since the Quake and Quake II sources have been released. The ones I had played around with required 3D hardware (can't even remember their names - that was a year or so ago). Of course editors with software rendering would be using floating point math. Same with the compilation of the map into the bsp, etc. That would all be done with floating point math, so if building a map is slow on a PC...
