Dan, Where's PocketDoom ???

Postby sirdaved » Aug 31, 2002 @ 11:59pm

Just for interest sake:

For those who wonder what the big deal is about Doom: there is probably no other game that generated more interest from amateur coders than Doom. There has never been a period quite like the year (1994) after Doom was released. At that time, there was almost ravenous interest in checking out the new Pwads (levels created by Doom hobbyists) that appeared almost every day and peaked during what has been called (by me :)) the 'great Doom summer of 1994'.

There was no internet quite like there is now. Most Doom-related discussions were on forums on Compuserve which was most popular at the time (AOL was very much in 2nd place!) and access speed was at a blistering 14.4 or 28.8 rate. Heated discussions occurred over who were the greatest Wad-authors eg. John Anderson (Dr. Sleep), Leo Lim, or Chris Polan etc) and what made a great Wad. Every once in a while even Romero himself would get involved in the discussion. The end result is that there are literally thousands of Wads to play once you have a good Doom port running. Nothing like that occurred with any other of the Id games, (including Quake).

I remember the Doom community, maybe I just wasn't in the right place, but Quake was a lot bigger mod/level-wise. I'd tell you to go check out cdrom.com, but the archives are gone :( (can never seem to goto the ftp they redirect you to)

Don't forget it's just a damn good game, and very attractive to amateur coders after the source release. Doom has more source ports than Quake and Q2 combined, it's not all about nostalgia here.

I was just looking through here to reload Doom when I crashed my Maestro, and wanted to post a couple of skins I had made for when Gamefreaks posts the new and improved gfDoom.

I've decided that I need more time to work on gfDoom, there's still too much to do before another release. Iv'e also got lots of little things to do with my other projects. Big update to HPC Quake, Code to add to HPC Doom, PQL needs work, and gfDoom still needs things adding...then theres the site which was created in about 10 minutes at about 3am in the moring...

Pencil in Friday 13th...(gulp!)

Thanks for the skins TBone...

TBone, those skins look very familiar from R0B's port.. I don't think they're yours.

gf, check out www.doomworld.com/ports
It doesn't seem to have the source, but it may help out.

Sponge, I did those skins for Rob's port. I hosted your skin when we were all coming up with them, remember? Don't be so paranoid.

Want more proof, check out tbonewalker.deviantart.com, and look at the dates for the one I posted there. It should be late last year.

AliensTC, for Doom, is the best total conversion ever and has yet to be topped. That's all I have to say.

I personally think Q2 had the best community made levels. Maybe not the most but definitely the best. The Edge, included in Q2, is the best first person deathmatch map ever made no questions about it.

--

Doom was more popular with the community because the tools were so readily available and so easy to use. There was no 3rd dimension to worry about. Doom you just drew lines and set their lowest and highest point, viola, a room. Quake you've got to use atleast 6 solids to create the exact same room, and then position them precisely in a 3D viewer. Doom autosnapped rooms together and with a simple Merge command you just created a hallway. Stairs were created automatically by the editor, just tell it how many steps. And with Dehacked you could easily modify any aspect of the game. I even created a darth vader death grip mod for Doom II using only dehacked, took me 20 minutes!
THIS is why Doom was more popular than Quake.

Doom3 is going to take level design to a whole new level.. but this I fear may be it's downfall. Levels take a lot longer to make now, and teams get bigger and bigger.

Q2DM1 was an id map, if it were 3rd party, it would be that much cooler.

From what I've seen? Oh yes. The low quality videos made me jump a bit.
